Since we're talking about Russell Wilson, I'd like to point out that I still think the Texans would be smart to model themselves after the Seahawks. Win with defense and running game and greatly restrict the QB's passing attempts. We've already seen that having Fitz throw the ball the league average 35 times a game doesn't work, so I'd like to try having him throw it an average of 25 times a game like Kaepernick or Wilson. Their coaches know that they don't have very good QB's so they limit the damage they can do and as a result of the super safe scheme they fool some into thinking they are really good QB's. IMO Fitz or Keenum could do that.
I'm with you on that, he protected the ball like a champ and he extends plays with his legs quite often. He's just the type of QB that I think will start to catch on in the NFL, no one will ever confuse him for a Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, or Brees, but when their teams are winning and their contracts are cheap, no one will care.
Cool... I'll post more things to talk the Texans up in a positive light. Cool... I guess Seattle could have won the super bowl with Fitzpatrick than which is a good thing for the Texans because all Russell did was hand the ball off with limited passing attempts. Fitzpatrick should have no problem handling that and O'Brien's play calling should help him.
I agree! cant wait to see how BOB's new system pans out, and hopefully Fitz gets tons of practice with our defense getting him the ball back constantly.
Seattle has way more talent. It's not just Russell Wilson or a couple defenders. That's my point. You think that if we Watt for Wilson the Texans will win the Super Bowl. Which, quite frankly, is absurd.
I don't think it's specifically QB-driven, though; I think it's a coaching philosophy. Harbaugh had Andrew Luck for two years and ran a run-first offense at Stanford (Luck averaged 25 attempts/game under Harbaugh; jumped to 31 his senior season). As for Wilson - he has thrown 30+ passes in 8 NFL games; his numbers are very good: 175/267 (65.5); 2,164 yards (8.1 YPA), 100.4 QBR; 13/4. In all other games: 334/533 (62.6); 4,311 (8.1 YPA); 39/15, 100.6. There's a chance, if asked to throw 30+ for 16 weeks, those numbers would fall so there could be an element of protection. But Wilson threw a lot of passes in college (31/game for his career) and only threw 30 INTs - so he's always been smart and efficient. It'll be interesting to see if Carroll takes the training wheels off this year. He hasn't historically been a ball-control coach. And Wilson is a significantly better QB than Ryan freaking Fitzpatrick so this idea that we can replicate what Seattle is doing is just silly. Ryan Fitzpatrick sucks.
We haven't seen Fitz in the game manager mode before so it's hard to say if he can pull it off or not. Play Wilson like a real QB and his numbers go in the toilet but he's really good at protecting the ball, making safe passes the few times he passes, and handing the ball off and that should be all we are asking out of Fitz or if he fails, Keenum.
Yea, those dummies who work in the NFL voted Russell a top 10 quarterback and voted Fitzpatrick one of the 5 worst starters in the league... What da heck do they know  No I do not think that and never said that... But I do think if the Texans had Russell instead of J.J. last season they would have won a lot more than two games. The Texans had a better offensive line and a better receiving core than Russell had in Seattle. And obviously you guys never seen Russell play in college if you think he can't sling the ball. I just tend to believe that a quarterback like Russell effects the game in a bigger way than a defensive end regardless of who that defensive end is. Just my opinion though. We'll see what happens this season.
I agree, it is hard to get too optimistic when it comes to our QB situation, I will give you that, appreciate ur positive approach tho While I also agree with this, I think that Watt was the reason 2012 was so successful.. he was top 25 in deflected passes, and the only one up there amongst DB's and he was 2nd or tied for 1st in sacks, almost beating the record. I think if Watt played like that again last year there would have been some games that went our way, but they started doubling up on him.... something that will be hard to do with Clownety coming too
You are right on that point only because Schaub was so epically bad. If we had just average QB play then you would not be correct.
Well would Russell have even played if he was on the Texans? Kubes had an unhealthy relationship with Schaub and I don't think he'd have benched Schaub any quicker, or more permanently. Odds are if RW was on the Texans last year, he'd have looked just like Keenum.
I don't think Kubiak is that dumb, but I think I have a little more respect for him than most. I think his cap management was one of the big reasons the regime came undone. He built a good team when he had money to spend, then the chickens came home to roost.
And that's what we'd be saying about RW if he was on the team. Try to make RW play like Schaub and you wouldn't get any better than when you try to make Keenum play like Schaub. In Russell Wilson's career, how many games does he have with as many pass attempts as Case Keenum had in his 3rd ever start? 0 In Russell Wilson's career, how many games does he have with 34 or more pass attempts? 3 in the regular season, 1 in the post-season for a total of 4 out of 37 games. In Case Keenum's almost 8 full games, how many does he have with at least 34 pass attempts? 4 That kind of context is important.
Mr Pieman pointed out to me that the advanced stats shows J.J. had an excellent year last season and the defense was still garbage. Can't expect what J.J. did in 2012 to be a regular occurrence. But Foster was the heart and soul and the reason for the Texans success more than any other person IMO under Kubiak. With that offensive line and no Foster _ I doubt it.
I know you've dug your heels in here, but you're going overboard to try and make your point. As I posted earlier, Wilson has thrown 30+ passes in 8 NFL games (same # of starts as Keenum had last year) and there is nothing - not a single shred of evidence - to suggest Wilson, who posted a 100 QBR in those 8 games, would have looked like Case Keenum. I don't fundamentally disagree with your premise that he's an overrated game manager (though I think more of him than you do) - but he is a signifcantly better QB than Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum. Come on...
Again though, context, those weren't his first 8 starts in the NFL and his team hadn't given up already and he had a run game and an amazing defense and an O line that cared and a head coach that wasn't itching to pull him at the first mistake. Take all of that away and how do you think he'd do? I think that Wilson is very good how he's used, but if you put him in the same situation Keenum was in, he'd look like crap because pretty much every QB in the NFL would. As to the comparisons of Wilson to Fitz or Keenum, it's hard to say because Wilson has never been used like Fitz or Keenum in a similar situation and Fits and Keenum has never been used like Wilson.
Sure, let's set some context... Has Russell Wilson ever had the priviledge of throwing to Andre Johnson? Owen Daniels? Rookie-year DeAndre Hopkins would have been Seattle's WR1 last year. And while Okung is a nice LT; he's not as good (or as healthy) as Duane Brown. etc. etc., etc. Keenum and Fitzpatrick are terrible QBs; Wilson is not. Based on how often poor QB play derailed the Texans last year, I'm guessing the upgrade from Schaub/Keenum to RW would have resulted in... 4-6 additional wins. His efficieny is certainly on par with prime Schaub ('08-'12).
No thank you, no reason we should trade for a quarterback who's results and performance is as inconsistent as Matt Schuab. Especially for Watt, who is still very young and very important to our defense.
