His stats suggest he was a #4 pitcher. He isn't close to getting expensive. He'll be getting league minimum for the next 2 seasons. Clearly what you don't understand is baseball.
Carlos Correa will come soon, which makes it hard to upgrade SS before then. Jason Castro is a solid catcher. I look forward to an upgrade at 1B & 3B.
Any upgrade at SS is just a stopgap until Correa gets here (which they obviously feel is where he'll stick or why trade for a 3B?
Ruiz just doesn't seem to be all that highly rated from what i've read. He's seemed to put up good numbers and I love how we got him in the draft with Correa, but I don't think the Stros are banking on him being the 3B of the future.
Horrible move to trade Cosart. He would have been one of the cornerstones of this rotation for a long time to come. Those people who are praising this trade today are probably the same ones that were thrilled to get Fowler. If the Astros' goal is to build a playoff team within the next few years, they took a step backwards with this move.
Lyles was definitely regressing to the mean prior to his injury and Fowler was performing above expectations prior to his. So I'm not there with you on that correllation. You may end up being correct, you just picked a weird time to fixate on that trade.
Fowler has been great this year before he got hurt, the people who were thrilled to get him were justified. I've always liked Cosart, but there was no guarantee he would even become a good pitcher. He's been decent this year, really good at times, but overall just decent. The Astros have a ton of pitching depth in the system, so trading one is OK IMO. The Astros are likely to have 4 picks in the top 40 next year, and this gives us even more felixibilty on the bonus pool so we can draft the first 2 guys with confidence that we will sign them both. Plus Colin Moran gives us 2 great prospects at 3rd, increasing the likelihood of one sticking.
Cosart has an era of almost 4.5 .... he has an extremely high walk/hit per 9 innings of 13 and has not been striking people out. He has not been a #2 or #3. His production has not been good enough to be a #5 on many staffs. I really like his potential, and as I said before, it concerns me that the Fish were willing to give up so much for him.... but production wise he hasn't been productive this season.
With his quality of pitches I could never understand why his strikeout Raye was so slow. But I've continued to say that based on my history of watching pitchers develop and gain control, I I felt he was one of those late bloomers. He also had a nice knack for stopping losing streaks this season but his high pitch count was always a concern.
Agreed. And hopefully it doesn't come at the expense of existing MLB talent. My only main issue is that this front office had clearly soured on Cosart after just one calendar year. That's a pretty harsh window, and I am as impatient as anybody. I figured the front office would at least wait till the season played out. I think him not being acquired by this front office played a role.
What's so special about next season? Do we really need a big bat next year? It still looks like the Astros are planning to suck until 2017 or later.
Rio Ruiz A+ 20 Years old 406 AB .300 BA 11 HR .854 OPS Colin Moran A+ 21 Years old 361 AB .294 BA 5 HR .735 OPS Of course it's in Lancaster but would Moran's numbers really be that much better than Ruiz?
Agreed. I can see Cosart growing into a legit #3 pitcher in a championship rotation, and he had a 1.95 ERA last season. His 4.44 ERA is not that aweful and he still needs more time to develop. Instead we traded him for a guy batting under .200 in the pros and a slap hitting 3B prospect which is very similar to Ruiz.
No. Both are very good prospects. I think Moran replaces Dominguez, and team trades Ruiz. Of course, with the DH, they are fine with 2 players at the same position.
In the sort term, this is not a good trade for the Astros. The Astros lost two producing MLB players. This will likely mean less wins this year and next. In the long term, this could be a good trade for the Astros. Moran could turn into a MLB third baseman with an above average bat. I thought that Luhnow had switched from restocking the farm to building a MLB team. This trade makes a deep farm deeper at the expense of the MLB team. My concern is that the Astros are turning into the Royals, always three years away from being a good team.
Moran projects for sure as a MLB 3B defensively Ruiz maybe not, and yes .735 OPS in his league and an .854 OPS in the Cali league are pretty similar. We can't give every decent pitcher 3 years to develop anymore. A 4.44 is bad, and his ERA last season was a complete mirage. He has been a below average pitcher this season.
Excited to see how Moran does, I think he'll be a very solid, fringe all-star guy.(300 BA, 15-20 HR) ish. And I think he could move very quickly to the Majors. That's all wishful thinking though.
