Some sort of a right wing Israeli wet dream. Won't happen. Israel will have to join the West and become a democratic, not religious/ethnic state if it wants peace.

Well to be honest, Saudi Arabia could easily bankroll financial support to stabilize the Gaza Strip, Qatar already does and they're destabilizing the region and Saudi Arabia has significantly more money at their disposal. The future threats to stability in the region lie in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, Hamas/Gaza are a destabilizing factor, and secretly Saudi Arabia & Israel have goals that are aligned to counter Iran.

The power dynamic of the Middle East is as follows:

Jordan/Egypt/Saudi Arabia/UAE and secretly Israel all aligned

    Iran/Syria/Hezbollah

    Turkey/Qatar/Hamas

And ISIS is the real growing threat that all of the above are afraid of

The West has no choice but to support Israel if they want any influence in the region. If Europe and US became openly antagonistic against Israel, where would Israel turn to next? Probably India, China, and Russia, is that really good for the West? No.

A very interesting idea, hoopster325. I read your post before this one and immediately thought that it made a certain amount of sense. Egypt controlled Gaza when I visited the region in the mid-'60's, before the '67 war. In the decades previous to '67, Egypt retained effective control, calling Gaza one thing or another, but keeping firm control, never the less. Heck, we already give Egypt billions in aid every year. Why not bump that up a bit to help pay for ending the mess that is the Gaza Strip? The Kingdom and the Gulf States should be eager to pony up.

Very interesting indeed, dude. Egypt would put up with Hamas for, oh, about 30 seconds.

    Thanks.

I think people need to stop looking at whats right and whats wrong, look at the reality, and provide solutions given the context of the reality. Everyone needs to shut up on who did what to whom.

Reality #1 - Jews are there to stay, no matter how revisionist some people are about history
Reality #2 - Palestinians need an outcome once and for all, and what that outcome is must depend on regional politics not on fantasy

Oslo failed and Camp David failed. Both Israelis and Palestinians were responsible. But regional politics have changed dramatically post-Arab Spring. Long-term regional stability should be the goal first and foremost for the international community.

I agree. But if I was Egypt, I wouldn't want to touch Gaza with a 10-ft pole. Already so many internal problems to deal with...

Also, for New Yorker and FranchiseBlade to think that the conflict would end if Gaza got this or that is really naive. Hamas only wants one thing: The total destruction of Israel. That will not change, no matter what they get. They are terrorists.

Even if you poured so much money into Gaza that they could theoretically be on the same economic level as Switzerland, Hamas would just use that to buy more weapons.

They want death to their enemies, not peace.

I would agree that 5 years ago they wouldn't touch Gaza with a 10 foot pole, but you have to agree that Egypt today, after two military coups that brought civil disorder to the streets of Cairo, is a very different Egypt.

Muslim Brotherhood is the threat to the Egyptian government, anything they can do to suppress their influence is within their interest. Suppressing the terrorist state aligned with their #1 threat to power that lies on its borders is within their interest. Pushing out Iranian, Qatari and Turkish influence on its borders is definitely within their interest. This is a different Egypt.

You and franchise made are really naive. Yall are throwing out these idealistic situations that just don't work in REALITY and the CONTEXT of the situation. Only way to end the violence is give up on Gaza. Countries like the uae and Qatar can give labor intensive jobs to the men instead of importing people from India, Sri Lanka etc. Similar situations can be set up throughout Islamic nations with aid from us/israel (guilt money in the billions). Otherwise it's just a naive fantasy to think Gaza can exist without bloodshed and the pointless he said, she said b.s.

A trend I've noticed -- the Palestinian sympathizers are more interested in pointing fingers at Israel and playing outrages as opposed to looking for a REAL solution. Trying to find a VIABLE answer. That also happens to be a reflection of the state of Islam today - pointing fingers but not implementing in house changes

Interesting speculation, but unrealistic. Egypt may be a military dictatorship, but even that has its limits. About 99% ofEgypt is not interested in helping Israel oppress the Palestinians.

Seeing Hamas as some sort of inherently evil group is sort of like bogeyman wmd in Iraq, :"they hate us because we are free"; the Iranian wish to have a few bombs to attack Israel because they are insane and want total elimination etc.-- jingoism. Hamas is a product of resistance to unjust Israeli policies. Initially Hamas was actually encouraged by Israel as an alternative to Arafat and the secular nationalist. Hama has offered long term truces to Israel and can be negotiated with if Israel would do so in good, not pseudo ,faith..

Have you always been prone to such simplicity, black and white thinking?

Maybe you might want to ask the son of the founder of Hamas about this?

Non responsive to whether Hamas is a response to Israeli occupation.

However, Hamas is Muslim and so is ISIS so in your simplistic views they are the same and want to kill all good folks because they are evil.

They would be doing it, glynch, because it would be in their interest to do it, not to help Israel oppress the Palestinians. Israel would have to stay out of Gaza if the Strip were a part of Egypt, unless they want to dump their peace treaty into the Suez Canal or some other body of water. Probably the Dead Sea would be a more apt spot to toss the thing, now that I think about it.

It would be of enormous benefit to the people living in Gaza. Huge amounts of aid. The ability to have a normal life, to go fishing in the Med, to stop wondering when the next Israeli assault is going to hit them. They could go to Cairo and wherever Egyptians are allowed to go, pretty much everywhere, and not crawl through a tunnel to do it. Sure, they would be trading Hamas for the Egyptian military regime, but in my opinion, that's a vast improvement. Israel would be delighted to have another secure border, another headache gone, in the main. The West Bank would become the focus of the sporatic attempts to get real peace talks going, without Hamas as an excuse to put them off. Indefinitely, the way things are going.

Just think about it. I know a lot of people will have the immediate reaction that the Plalestinians would be "denied their freedom to have their own state," but what freedom do they have now? The freedom to be killed and maimed due to Israeli retaliation for acts blamed on Hamas? The pressure would fall on Israel to finally come to terms with an Palestinian State on the West Bank. Those Palestinians in Gaza could move to the West Bank if they don't want to remain under Egyptian rule. There is room for them, plenty of room, if Israel finally follows international law and leaves the West Bank. I said earlier that the settlements, the vast majority of them, should be given to the Palestinians of the West Bank as compensation for decades of oppression, not blown up before Israel withdraws, which I think is a very real possibilty. Handing most of them over would solve so much misery, and would be a real carrot to dangle in front of those who hesitate to agree to a peace treaty. The Old City of Jerusalem would be under international control, with all religions having free access. That's something else that needs to happen, another problem preventing peace that needs to be solved. Israel wouldn't have to be concerned about where to put "corridors" to give West Bank access to Gaza, because it would be a part of Egypt and not needed. That's a big problem Israel has worried about when attempting to figure out just what a Palestinian State would look like.

Like I said when I read Hoopster's initial post, it just makes too much sense. Don't jerk a knee. Give it some thought.

Well, this "Islamic cleric" from Jerusalem also says Egypt should annex Gaza, but with a different goal....
