fchowd, I don't really want to respond to the post above your last one. It is naive and childish, topped by the icing on the cake of the most irrelevant, stupid statement of "how many forbes 100 originate from Muslim nations" in an effort to make a point. You try too hard to come off as profound and well connected to the society you're in because you are in fact, an immigrant who is deeply insecure about his identity.
I am a born and bred American and no, I don't have any experience with higher education. What I do have experience with is working in agriculture for multiple decades and moving all over this great land to succeed at what I do. I currently stay in California which is the epitome of the "objectification" I speak of. On a drive down from Chico to stop for gas, LAST WEEKEND, a young woman in a dress drunkenly stumbled out of her car and her breasts popped out. She was escorted inside by a sleazy Armenian or Iranian accompanying her to get some water. They of course were riding in a 6 figure car I'm guessing. These are the so called winners of our "AMERICAN CULTURE". These are the people paraded around on television and by the media as those able to "HAVE FUN". Deeper values, stronger ideals are seen as foolish. If you want to live in your little bubble, thinking you've seen it all because you served time, then keep living that lie because RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, it's all falling apart

 

Having been to all those places repeatedly (except Iran), I must conclude you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about.

This is, objectively, so stupid it makes my head hurt. As one example of many, in each of the "non-barbarous" nations you list above a woman's testimony is only worth half a man's for a variety of legal situations. Respectful indeed.

 

I really wanted to stay out of this thread (since the obvious poopslinging between posters I do respect). But I was bored so I ventured into this thread. I would like to comment on the question in the thread and not discuss the implications for the Israel palestina conflict, since I think that it doesnt matter how civlized the cultures are.

I disgusts me that there are many countries who threat those groups badly. The fact that some muslim countries have female leaders does not mean a lot when those are just daughters/wives from previous leaders.

Don't act like there isn't a problem with under reporting in our country. If you double or even triple the unreported cases in Muslim countries it still might not add up to these numbers.

Female abuse and violence is an issue around the world (I've read anywhere from 35-70% of women have fallen victim). It is disgusting for people to be singling out other parts of the world and comparing them with each other. "My country rapes/beats/kills less women than your country does." Like that's something to be proud of, especially when 22 million have been raped/beaten/abused in some way.

 

How many 14 year old girls want to have sex with a 30 year old man? The real question is do those girls have a choice? They do in the US.

 

I think you missed my point.

In the US a 14 year old girl who sleeps with an adult is considered a rape victim because she cannot consent legally. That's a protection.

In many of these countries a 14 year old girl who sleeps with an adult is usually one who was forced to marry some older man as part of a business or family transaction and she has no right to claim rape.

I was making the same point you are. Our "respect" for women can actually inflate the sexual assault cases in the US because things we make illegal to protect women and girls are things that a woman isn't even allowed to complain about elsewhere.

As I already said, America (and all western countries) have issues with violence against women, but America is the shining city on the hill for respect of women when compared to the Middle East.

Female circumcision (though rare)
Forced marriage as children
Spousal rape not being recognized as a crime
Spousal abuse not necessarily being recognized as a crime
Witnesses required for rape
Rape victims going to jail for adultery
Rapists being able to escape punishment if they marry their victim (lol wut!)
Rape victims being shunned by society
etc. etc. etc.

I mean damn dude.

 

Just further reinforces my belief that extremely conservative Christians in the US have more in common philosophically with extremely conservative Muslims than they realize.

Let's start with the home and family life and analyze how women are looked at their - namely my their male counterparts. This isn't America in the 60's anymore where mutual respect, courtesy, opening doors is seen as a sign of masculinity. This is a society that teaches every girl to take a chance with the hooligan, jock or sociopath who is seen as confident, then fall back on the gentlemen if she isn't cut out for the big league's. THAT is where the lack of American culture comes in, not your arbitrary legal situation.
