LOL Blinedbirdy. Ha ha. I'm sure he could build a championship team. Ha ha. All you armchair gms who hate on Daryl, you don't know sheet. Did Houston need to improve or not? Did Parsons show up vs Portland or not? Every other team in the league would love to be San Antonio. So what do you want to do? You want to suck for ten years until you get a lotto ball and a lucky pick like Duncan? Daryl took a shot at having the best team in the NBA next year with Bosh and Parsons. Sure he could have taken the safe route and kept Parsons one year and then lost him the following year as an unrestricted free agent. Yes, Cuban and Bosh through a wrench in those plans, but he tried to not just make us better, get out of first round but to make us the best, win a championship. And then haters likeBlind bird and the rest of you arm chair gms whine not realizing how great a job he's done. Probably 30 other teams would love to have Daryl and his mind making their team have a chance at titles and getting better. Harden and Howard are still a good young core. He's not that far away, he just needs one more break. And he will work hard enough to get it.
I stopped reading at the Spurs treating players like family. The Spurs are a top notch team but seriously... NO ONE in the league can be like the Spurs or recreate what they've done. There is only one Popovich. There are only a few players in this league that would take less money to make there team better, the Spurs have 3 of those. It's a combination of luck and having a great coach that players want to play for. Morey let Parson test the market so he could get paid and to make sure he wasnt disgruntled knowing that he's playing another year making a lot less than he should.
I think it's 90 percent those 3 athletes. They are just so unique in their attitudes and approach to basketball. Even OKC who is the closest to them, will probably have some speed bumps in the upcoming years. Pops and Buford deserve some credit, but they are extremely lucky to have those 3 players. They are just great professionals more than great guys. Parker cheated on his wife but never on the Spurs. Not to mention they have been durable for like 12 years. We didn't even get 2 healthy years of Yao and Tmac.
So Duncan, Parker and Ginobli had nothing to do with it? All we have to do is hold on to guys like Garcia, Lin and Asik and we win a title? Damn. Why don't more gms think of doing that? Just hold onto inferior talent and wait until it gels. Brilliant. I guess that's what the Miami Heat did, right?
HEH?? People need to get it in their mind they're taking less because they're old and deserve less. When they were in a position t get paid, they did. Manu took less money? Yea remember 2 years ago when he had a horrendous finals, he averaged 11.8, shooting 43% from the field....he made 14.1 million that year.
I agree. The reason Pop and his system works so well is b/c of Duncan's humility. Duncan, from day one, has been Pop's whipping boy and was never treated like a pampered star. He buys into it, and because he does, the rest of the team buys into it. Give Pop a team led by Carmelo or Kobe and either him or the team star is gone.
great spot on article. "shortcut to the top" is what stood out for me. Sure Celtics and Heat have won with a big 3 relatively soon but a big difference is that their teams were disciplined under a good coach.
this, as soon as I saw the title it had to be blinebury, and that's why I didn't even bother trying to read a single sentence
He has some good points. Reading the article in the vacuum of this offseason, it's easy to jump on anti-Morey bandwagon. However, Blinebury forgets all that the Rockets FO has accomplished heretofore. Yeah, declining Parsons' option was a huge mistake, captain obvious. But saying that the wheeling and dealing nature of the Rockets is destructive, he's just plain wrong. We weren't a championship squad and we don't have a Popovich or Carlisle to coach up inferior players. Rockets have to brute force it by amassing talent and assets. Trading up from paperclips to Porsches is how we got to our enviable position in the first place. WITHOUT TANKING. That's unheard of. Does he not remember that? I agree with people that chemistry is important and you have to give players time to gel and develop. At some point the major turnover has to cease. But we simply weren't at that point yet. This article is just pandering to pissed off Rockets fans.
I'm a little surprised at so many people agreeing with that article. Anybody that's been around the Rox organization for some time should be at least bit skeptical of this piece. Let me try and break this down by point: - Losing Parsons and gaining Ariza is equated to making or breaking the team. Really? We haven't even completed a roster at this point. As much as losing Parsons sucks, nothing to date suggests that he was that transformative player that makes us championship caliber. The truth is, nobody knows what the outcome will be. - Praises gimping a team's chances by overcommitting for the sake of "building a sense of family and togetherness". That's just shameless emotional pandering. More to the point, the Spurs have rotated their lineup by quite a bit and even releasing starting players. They never stopped tweaking their roster as well. They had the good fortune of having their core players and and astute sense of acquisition when it presented itself. - Most teams that settle don't win. That's just the hard reality of it. You can only stabilize once you've acquired the necessary pieces and even then, you still tweak along the way. Morey will keep swinging for the fences until we get a championship caliber team together. If that seems unreasonable, maybe this isn't your type of team. - Fan loyalty is not a prerequisite to winning. It's nice to have fans on your side but more fans are out there when you win. - He disparages the the CBA methods by which the Rox play by and yet never mentions that the same mechanics allowed us to acquire the likes of Howard and Harden in consecutive seasons. - Likened us to the Heat post Lebron. We coundn't be more of an antithesis of what transpired in Miami. That would be like saying we would've signed Parsons to $100+m after Dwight left us and tried to keep a gimpy Harden. - Finally, it's been literally less than a year to date that Howard and Harden played together. This guy's piece reads like we've had our franchise players for years and Morey's gambling addiction is the cause of of our demise. TLDR - That article was disingenuous at best.
Its terrific that this article was written after Parsons wasnt matched...But the real question is wouldve Blind-bury still written the column if the Rockets matched on Parsons. Answer is most likely not. Losing Asik and Lin(to some extent) hurts just as much as losing Parsons, but everyone seems to be crushed by the loss of Parsons. Laker fans last year were angry when Dwight Howard, one of the league's most dominant players, decided to leave money/fame/lights and join a mid major market team in Houston. That was a player of Dwight Howard's caliber. The city of Houston is in mourning losing Chandler Parsons. Talk about perspective. Stars win in this league. Superstars win titles. While Harden has yet to prove himself in the playoffs, we have one bonafide superstar in Dwight...DM gambled to make our team better. However, what we have seen is very few players really sacrifice for their fans and the team, and a majority look for their paydays(there is nothing wrong with that). Winning is secondary. Too bad we as fans will continue to be suckers in this "business of basketball."
But while some are down on Morey for swinging for the fences, those same folks were fired up about possibly getting LBJ, Melo, Bosh, etc... Hindsight is always 20/20.
