and wasnt he dominating High school ball with this issue as well? you think hes going to risk losing top 5 money in the hopes of going getting his elbow fixed 100% and waiting 3 years?!

no way , he'll tke the 3.6 or whatever minimum we throw at him

If it means he can get back to a level of dominance... vs. picking somebody else who is another total crapshoot (since all picks in the drafts, regardless of where they are picked are being deemed so)... then I'd take it.

It's not your money... and they're not going to use that money on anybody else if he doesn't sign. Their chances of landing somebody "better" next year are just as unknown as him being a dominant ace (regardless of TJ surgery).

It's obviously a negotiation... both sides want a deal, but they also want what is fair.

I'd also venture to guess the issue is "not" as serious as everybody here is speculating... and if so, it makes more sense on both sides (how he was able to dominate, and the value of the contract still being high).

we're talking about the #1 pick here. does your number ONE pick of the draft really have to go through the process of getting back to his "dominance" BEFORE hes even signed to the team?!

jesus christ what a crap shoot of luck we have. I srsly hope its not a serious injury and this is just a pissing match between the two parties for monetary purposes.

No... my point is that I'm FOR signing him now, especially if this "injury" is 100% recoverable from. Also, what does the #1 pick really mean when more have gone on to lackluster/non-careers than HOF careers?

Hell, our #1 pick from last year is going to have to have a unprecedented turnaround for a "top" prospect to start dominating like he was expected to do so.

In other news about actual Astros minor leaguers...

The trio of Davis/Reed/Fisher is looking really good right now at TC. After a bit of a slow start AJ Reed is tearing the cover off the ball now sporting a .313/.420/.495 line, with a 16/17 K/BB ratio. He seems to be a guy that should move extremely fast.

Based on scouting reports Davis appears to be a slightly lesser version of Reed, both big, 1b/DH, no glove guys. But he's also hitting very well. I'm guessing the Astros will wanna split these 2 up by sending them to difference affiliates next year.

DJ Fisher appears to have an extremely high ceiling, only has 29 PA , but early results are good. Unlike the other 2 he is very athletic.

While the Aiken situation is frustrating, very promising early results from this draft.

The FO is trying Davis at the hot corner to start his career. He's made 24 appearances at 3rd base, 2 at DH and 1 at RF. He could definitely use an offseason worth of prep at thirdbase as he's already made 10 errors in 24 games there.

I bet Fisher, Reed and Davis all go to Lancaster next year. The MO has skipping the college guys past QC to Lancaster. Gregor is the only college guy I can think of that had to put in significant time at QC but Aplin, Tucker, and Kemp all started their first full seasons in HiA.

Phillips is quietly having a mini-breakout season. He is probably the least heralded of the 2012 class's top 8 round picks but he's managed nearly a .300/.360/.490 slash line in LoA at age 20. It's easy to overlook him because QC doesn't have a ton of position prospects compared to the higher levels.

Lancaster is going to have a monster lineup next year.

    LF: Derek Fisher
    CF: Bobby Boyd
    RF: Brett Phillips
    C: Jobduan Morales.
    1B: AJ Reed
    2B: Nick Tanielu
    SS: Mott Hyde
    3B: JD Davis

Tony Kemp keeps on keepin' on...

    2-3 w/ a HR and 3 RBIs. Hitting .366 at Corpus.

He seems like a fast mover, but where can he possibly play besides 2B if he progresses to the ML level by sometime in 2015?

I guess the ideal scenario is that he keeps it up and is included in a package of prospects for a top flight Star, but will we be ready to make that kind of trade by next year considering those are usually reserved for legit contenders?

We've decided to call him by his middle name of Joseph, so it's Joseph Fisher, or DJ Fisher. The less we see of his given name the better.

LF and DH if his bat forces his way into the big league lineup. I like Kemp a lot but he's more likely to follow an Altuve path and never make a top 100 list than a more heralded prospect like DDJ. He's listed at 5'6''.

With Springer in CF and Santana/Tucker in RF, I think they could carry a low-power, high OBP guy like Kemp in LF for a while. There's no guarantee but I think he profiles as a better everyday hitter than Kike.

And put an end to the madness that is success in Lancaster for a pitcher? Never. Let the voyage continue.

But really, he should be moved up.
