Can anyone explain the trade kicker? I don't understand that?

Exactly my point. The market is unpredictable and players who don't deserve it get the max every offseason (Eric Gordon as an example). I'm sure Morey went through all the possible scenarios before free agency began and dismissed the one we are in right now with too much ease.

If HOU picked up Chandler's option, signed a 3rd star and had a great finish next season (at least WCF), do you think Morey wouldn't give at least near-max to Chandler at end of season? This would be enough for Chandler to not explore other options. I mean, it's a much safer "gamble" that the one he took right now. And if Chandler leaves for nothing, you still have that 3rd superstar. Now we may end with nothing.

    If this is true

And Parsons is getting his max salary, wouldn't the trade kicker be moot? Why even have it?

edit: OK, I think I understand.

While a player's salary may not exceed his max due to a trade kicker, perhaps it STILL must be counted as part of the incoming salary (if traded). For example, if Chandler's salary is simply $15m with a 500K trade kicker, he would count as $15.5m of incoming salary even though he doesn't get the extra cash.

The reason why this was included is that Chandler can opt to WAIVE the kicker, in order to make it easier/harder to go to another team. Thus, this can be described as a "pseudo no-trade clause" and another layer of control.

Him removing the Rockets pic and editing his info to not say Houston, TX kind of worries me, makes me think that Morey told him they wouldnt' match.

Guess we will find out in 3 days. I think we match if we snag Bosh.

    1) The Rockets are on a timetable. They are probably going to blow most of their FA load this summer.

    2) As such, they will have even less room to resign Parsons next year.

    3) In addition, Parson's dollar and year commitment would be larger next year.

The chances of keeping Parsons beyond 2015 were greater if we let him be an RFA, plain and simple.

I don't think that is correct. First, Cuban, compared to many other owners, really understands basketball and he has one of the best coaches in the NBA to help him.

Offer to a RFA is not just an act. The team commits that amount of it's cap to the deal for those three days. If they saw fit to do that instead of going after other players (or being able to do that), they are clearly serious and they think Parsons is worth it. In fact, looking at the FA market just now, I think he is very much worth that deal. Dallas is looking at the market right now, because they need a serious roster for the coming season, not the one after that.

That's what I think is going on. Things could change, but I believe Wojo tweeted that Parson's tried to get a contract with Houston but talks broke down. Morey may think that is too much to pay for Parson's. Morey usually doesn't overpay. He finds cheap talent, and looks for stars. Parson's was cheap talent. I personally think Parson's is closer to the 9-10 Million range but that's just my opinion. It could all be Morey's plan to match. Just my humble opinion. ;)

@3): Salary cap is increasing each year, so proportionally it would be the same.

Yes, the chances were greater, but the risk too. Morey was essentialy choosing between Chandler+3rd superstar (high risk, high reward) against 3rd superstar with Chandler possibly leaving (low risk, medium reward). He took the high risk choice and now he is paying the price for it.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Morey should take a more safe approach.

I'm sorry if long time CFers see me as only criticizing Morey. I'm not criticizing his whole work, but his latest move only. Since my homerism isn't as strong as yours, I think I can look at the situation more realistically than you. Still Rocket's great fan though.

    Agreed.

I think Parsons was worth $12 million a year MAX but closer to $11 million. He is getting overpaid and im cool with it if we dont match....i still trust morey.

Remember we have Harden and Dwight because of him.

I know Chandler's gotta do what's best for him, but right now what's best for me is to say F**K Chandler Parsons.

The thing is, I wouldn't criticize Morey even if he had retained him. There was cost-benefit to both. Criticizing it based on hindsight is weak. I can see reasons for doing either move, so I'm not in a position to play MMQB. That's not homerism. That's realism.

for only 3 years, I think Cuban understood the Mavs has no chance in signing any of the big names FA. Its rather a short contract for Parson, but an overpaid one indeed.

Parson prolly heard that we are chasing after Deng which means the talk between Morey and Parson's agent broke down in a bad way.

This is going to hurt us if we dont sign Bosh this summer.

With all this drama about Parson's going around, anybody feel bad for dirk?

If I didnt't already hate Cuban before, plus what he is doing with Parsons, he REALLY screwed Dirk.

Cuban: "Dirk, you're my boy, my star player, the son I always wanted... take a lot less than you're worth, dont talk to anyone else, and I will bring someone in to help make us a contender again."

Dirk: "Ok papa, how about 10 mil a year? is that small enough?" "we can offer the new guy 'the Key to the city!' And I would never leave you"

Cuban: "Thats perfect, and of course that will work. Thanks a bunch"

Cuban: "So Dirk, we failed on everyone, but I think I can at least get back at my nemesis and childhood bully D. Morey... I'm gonna take his 3rd best player from him and pay him 5 mil more than you a year, it wont make our team better, but I get the last laugh. You cool with that?"

    Dirk: "Wait, what?"
