I love the offense to chain... It's a local chain AND it's the best. Who says a chain can't be the best? Mom and pop places have weird tastes usually.
I was hoping to see in this thread. My inspiration to start it was thinking back to eating at westco back in the day. Is it still around?
It really depends on the location. The one on river oaks, probably not the same as the one on Westheimer. But the more you taste and search, you'll end up finding your favorite spot just like any other fast food joint.
Please name them. Seriously...I would be interested in trying them if they are not too far away because Shipley's glazed are like crack when warm and fresh and you are making it sound like it is Panda Freaking Express. And if they don't make their donuts, why do I see them making them when I go there to get my kids donuts at 6:30 on saturday mornings? DD does not have better donuts IMO. Not even close. But their coffee is top notch.
Man! Shipley's!! I remember there was a Shipley's right next to my Elementary School and I used to stop by every once in a while. Every time I want to try other donuts stores I end up regretting it. Shipley's is the best for me.
Lol cmon man, I made two typical jokes that somebody would make if you mentioned a chain restaurant as the best. You act like I went Don Rickles on everyone. That's what we do here, right? Make a little fun of each other? To me, when somebody mentions Shipleys as the best, my guess is they're hesitant to try a hole the wall when there is an established brand. So I feel like people are missing out. But I could be completely wrong, just my opinion. At the end of the day, to me, it's just dough and sugar. If somebody gave me a hot & fresh donut from 6 different shops, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So I prefer mom and pops because I feel they care more about their product and service than say somebody just trying to get a check. Does McDonalds grind their beef patties in store? No. Most Shipleys use pre-made dough and glaze. They just have to fry it. While most mom and pops make everything from scratch. But that only matters if you care about stuff like that. Not that it's necessarily bad. And I apologize to anyone offended by my non Shipleys endorsing jokes :grin:
Listen, donuts are SERIOUS, SERIOUS BUSINESS. They are not to be talked about so flippantly. Just kidding, I don't even like donuts. I'm more of a breakfast taco kind of guy.
I went there earlier today. The specialty doughnuts are made to order so they come out warm and fresh. The customer service was also excellent. The owner gave me a doughnut on the house since I drove 35 minutes to get there. I was a bit pricey, but I'd recommend the place.
This is really making me miss good donuts especially Shipley's. In MN they don't have any Dunkins or Krispy Kremes anymore. Most donuts here come from convenience stores of the 7-11 type, here it is Super America and Holiday, but those are factory made and not that good. Some of the grocery stores make them fresh but I don't think their quality is as good as a place dedicated to donuts. About the best of the bunch is a local Midwest Chain called Cub does a German Chocolate Bismark (fried cinnamon roll) with German Chocolate frosting on it. Many bakeries do donuts too and there are a handful of mom and pop places that focus on donuts. None of the one's I've tired though I think are as good as Shipley's. One problem is that the Midwest style donut tends to be larger and doughier than Southern donuts which are smaller and richer.
I love coconut pecan frosting. Got a picture of what you are talking about? Google shows large variance.
Shipleys all the way. i had dunkin donuts once when i was in yankee land... what garbage. donuts are supposed to be soft and doughy not heavy cake. blech.
