I think you're probably right, but I'm hoping for a bit of a discount, since Morey/Les gave him an opportunity to get his first big contract now, instead of next year. Not a big discount, but a little under the max. That's my guess.
If the cap #'s are correct, you'd have to think that Parsons getting the max would kill the Rockets down the road with their flexibility in later years with his raises. I mean we are actually talking about Morey & Les potentially going up all the way to the hard cap and/or cutting everyone other than the starting 5 to get enough salary cap space to sign Bosh & retain Chandler. I never in a million years would think Les would go all Prokhorov on us like this. My guess is, Morey & co. know something we dont know yet about the salary cap increase, or some clever way they are going to work in his contract. Either way, I find it hard that Fegen would let his client accept anything less than comparable market value which seems to most definitely be the max. I'm pretty much prepared for anything when it comes to the upcoming Parsons contract. I think we are in for a head scratcher at first, and then a "he did what!" reaction 15 minutes later when we get the true details.
True, They are basically giving him an extra 11-14 million dollars. Im thinking there was a deal in place, They let him out early. since the rockets let him out early, In the next 4 years: He can make more money taking a 11million/yr offer from the rockets compared to a Max offer next year. 11m/yr = 44Mill Max next year = 43Mill Of course, he would get a 5th year, but at this rate I'm sure he will get around the same range when he gets out a year earlier.
I trust Morey has a plan/good idea of what is going on with the Cap in down the road. I am sure they have these things planned out. Further, if CP25 gets that 15M/per deal, it makes it more likely that he gets traded down the road. Morey won't lose an asset like CP25 in FA. But he can flip him for something else down the road. Similar to when he signed Ariza to that FA contract and then got out of it. He got out of the last year of the Asik deal and will get out of Lins. Morey knows how to escape and leverage assets. There are known unknowns here for us fans, but my guess is Morey has a cap strategy in mind. Surely he could see this situation coming with CP25 and the pursuit of a 3rd star max contract guy.
I don't understand why the rockets are interested in every top player? It seems like they have a plan to keep Parsons some how. Maybe I just don't understand, this is crazy.
Lebron to Cleveland: Rockets likely get Bosh and retain Parsons at a reasonable (sub-max) rate Lebron stays in Miami: Rockets miss on Bosh and are forced to match a max offer from Cleveland for Parsons All aboard the Lebron to Cleveland train!!!
After Parsons resigns the Rockets are capped out for the next few years. This Summer is the final straw for them to add an impact player. After that, you are looking at trades, late draft pick gambles, or MLE type contracts to add any players of significance. Maybe the Rockets are going after "too big" of a fish & seem desperate, but its incredibly obvious to anyone that understands the salary cap to know that this is the Summer to get a big fish regardless of how big because after that, your fishing in a much much smaller pond.
The numbers I read have next year's projected cap at $66M or so and then the one for the year after to go up substantially, maybe to $80M (according to former NBA Executive VP Stu Jackson). This is because not only is there a general upward trend in league income, but that the NBA is currently under a undervalued national TV deal (with ESPN/ABC and Turner), which expires in 2016. The new national TV deal for 2016 and after is expected to rise substantially, perhaps even double in size. See here: http://adage.com/article/media/nba-double-rights-fees-tv-deals/241839/ Given this, the Parsons contract really isn't a huge issue except for maybe this upcoming season if the Rockets acquire Bosh via a S&T and subject itself to being "hard-capped" at the $81M or so "apron" level. As long as Parsons performs at the same level that he did last season or better, the contract will be just fine. The free agent contracts signed next year and beyond will be even bigger than Parsons' and you'll be able to trade him for value.
You don't understand how the cap works. We could sign 2-3 solid players and retain Parsons. Or we could sign Bosh or 2/3 players and let Parsons walk and it wouldnt affect the cap. What sounds better for the fan?
Lowry contract 2.0 , watch us match the offer, Parsons will explode into a star, making his contract a value contract. Then Parsons will be traded to Toronto after Dragic takes his starting spot.
