But that's what I'm saying as well. I know they say that about Walking Dead, but there are Zombies and shootouts and rival groups and tanks attacking prisons and cannibals. They do try to delve into the characters but they also have big set pieces and a level of action (not enough for a lot of watchers) that I don't think you're going to get with The Leftovers. The driving force behind "Under the Dome" is figuring out what the dome is and how to turn it off or figuring out what the "dome" wants them to do. Again, I'm not sure you're going to get any of that with The Leftovers. It's not a show about figuring out what happened to the people who disappeared. A typical show would be. Here's this mysterious thing that happened, so now the intrigue of the show is figuring out what this thing is and why it happened. That's what LOST was and what shows have been trying to copy (mostly unsuccessfully) ever since. But this show is taking a different path. It's kind of like LOST if they never encountered the smoke monster and never found the hatch and it was just about people stranded on an island. All this mysterious stuff might still exist in that universe, but the show wouldn't be about that.
they are definitely trying to figure out "what happened" based on what I saw from episode 1. there's a congressional commission, there are non stop radio programs talking about it, etc... I don't expect action from this show.
Heard an interview with the author (who also wrote the pilot) on Fresh Air this weekend. He's very clear that the story is not about figuring out the mystery of what happened. He doesn't even know why everyone disappeared. The story is about how the event affects the people who were left behind.
I don't think I can remain interested if they never answer the question to what happened to those people. Or, at least, another round of people should disappear and the storyline should be more about figuring out the catastrophe. Do those people return from wherever they are? Obviously, we've seen this storyline before. But, I don't think it will go there. Like was said, it seems more about a post-apocalypse "how do we live now knowing what happened and it will never be solved" character drama. I don't feel vested enough to give a crap how these people live after-the-fact. That said...it could work if they can get us to feel vested in the characters. Right now...I just don't care about any of them and wish they were taken, too.
Interesting show. I'll keep watching, but wtf? Also, if they don't even attempt to explain what happened I'll be pissed.
I'm curious about this Wayne guy, why are people following him? Does he have answers? Does he just make people feel better? Is the secret to a better life asian women?
Looks like show about a lot of people feeling sorry for themselves or using this 'event' to not give a ***** anymore and do what ever they want Does not seem overly appealing Rocket River
Maybe for the youth, a traumatic event that they cannot explain would lead them to that mentality. However, the main character is far from a nonchalant personality, as well as the little we saw from Liv Tyler, the mysterious Wayne, and other characters. I cannot judge it from the 1 hour pilot, I'll probably give it a couple weeks based solely off of its HBO merit.

they need to elaborate more, people will start losing interest if they don't know what **** is going on. Also, we need MOAR JILL.
I'm gonna give it one more episode. Something interesting/twist has to happen asap. I'm all for a melancholy series, but this is getting too drawn out.
