Canaan is likely the backup PG.
Nick Johnson is on 15 man roster, but will likely be in RGV for most of the year.
Troy Daniels is likely the backup 2.
Melo can slide over to play some SF when Parsons is on the bench.
Covington can play some minutes at three if the Rockets play someone else at the 4.
Garcia will probably be on team fighting (but losing) for PT.
Casspi may or may not be on team.
Papanikolaou is an option for MLE if the Rockets sign and trade for Melo.
Jordan Hamilton may re-sign for chump change.

One of the more realistic posts regarding the FA situation. I don't think Rockets will get any superstar, nor a Tier 2 star (but this is more possible). The big FAs seem to have already decided where to go, or not go. Lebron will stay in Miami. Love is interested in GSW, Melo, is more uncertain but cannot say if he will want to pick here as his top choice.

If Bosh doesn't stay in Miami because he does not want to take a paycut, I think him considering Rockets might be solid. At this point the Rockets should look into complimentary role players and vets that can do a skill or two really well to fit the current makeup of the team and just improve their core.

    just my 2 cents.

Rondo is rumored to be in multi-team trade. Could we be involved?

Now that Lowry has signed with the Raptors, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rockets stay with what they've got a PG. If we can upgrade the roster at other spots, then I don't think PG is a major concern. Maybe Morey tries to acquire Rondo if we don't have to give up a core player.

Aaron Brooks! The guy is a former Rocket and already familiar with the team!

We could also wait and see what Isaiah Canaan can do off the bench.

I dont really have any faith in Morey bringing a competent PG midseason if Canaan doesnt work out. Morey tends to overvalue his own assets IMO. FA is our best bet.

Dragic may be available. The Rockets should aggressively pursue him if he is. Offer a slightly watered down version of the the Kevin Love package for him.

We better not have to rely on Hamilton, Casspi, Garcia, Lin or Canaan at the wing and guard position. I really loved how Morey filled out our bench during 07-09 but now it's the time he shows he can get those veterans and reliable bench players!! I don't care if we have to sacrifice Parson or trade Lin, Jones, D-Mo to make room for a Tucker, Jamal Crawford, Isaiah Thomas etc.

Most of the players on your list will probably not be Rockets next season.

not really sure why we would be in a rush to bring in a vet PG to start out the season. you need to see what you have canaan and johnson at some point. if the production isn't there by trade deadline you will have a plethora of options to fill that void.

between daniels and johnson you can fill the void at the back-up 2

you have a big hole at back-up 3 based on the revolving door we had last year

has the ship sailded on DMo? is he going to get a shot at back-up 4/5 minutes or is he trade fodder at this point?

If McHale didn't trust the bench last season, he's going to hate the bench next season. Shipping out Asik and Lin will create a huge hole. All starters 40+min

He brought in Lowry for Rafer Alston mid season.

So be careful when it comes to underestimating the wizard.

Our second unit is likely Canaan, Harden, Parsons, Melo, and a center to be named later or Canaan, Harden, Melo, T Jones (or DMo, Covington, or a PF to be named later), and Howard. I think the Rockets second unit will do just fine.

If the Rockets get Melo, there will be about 8-10 minutes a game (not counting games that Rockets blow out other team) that 3 of Harden, Parsons, Melo, and Howard will not be in the game.

These are the likely options for perimeter players, so not everyone will be on the team (I see the bottom three as unlikely). I do think at least half will be Rockets. I do think the odds are against bringing in someone significant not included on this list for more than the minimum.

Considering I expect Morey will use most of his flexibility getting Melo (or other star player), I don't have much faith in improving the PG spot either if Canaan falters. However, if the Rockets do get Melo, the PG only needs to play defense, shoot threes, and not trip over his shoelaces on most nights.

Depends who we get. Best case scenario? Sign Melo outright. Get a cheap 3 and D vet (somone off the MLE) to play SF with Melo at the 4. Make Parsons the 6th man; Jones the 7th and rotate it so that you always have at least one of your top perimeter scorers (Parsons, Melo, Harden) on the court at all times. Other team's defense can't take a break- and you dont need Chandlers offense witg Melo and Harden on the court.

If we don't get anyone from the Melo/Bron/Bosh group, I expect Lin will stay. He won't get much return in a trade because of all the financial stuff around his contract, but he's a pretty decent backup PG on the court. Why would we dump him if we have no use for the cap space we could get for him? Keep Lin, use the MLE to bring in 1-2 more role-players.
