It sucks that they play so much better when chasing a lead, but in the end it doesn't make sense because they're still winless when giving up the first goal right?
Dang you Wondo - wide open net a chance to be a hero and WHOOSH.....Casey at the bat. Proud of USA they had their chances, and the young kids in Yedlin and Green played fearlessly and well. I am a little disappointed that we didn't attack more this tournament - but overall - a solid showing all the way around. I guess this will be the end for Dempsey, Jones, Davis, Zusi...... DD
As much as he "choked", the flag was up, so it wouldn't have counted anyway, even though it wasn't even close to offsides
Wondo is a talented striker...he just whiffed. Not gonna bury him for that. No one feels worse than him. At his age, this was his one shot at world cup glory and he struck out. You know who would have made a difference today? Lan....nevermind. Good game, better luck next time.
The flag wasn't up, it was up for the goal kick. I still don't understand how it was only 1 minute of stoppage time in the 2nd period of extra time, that was a bunch of BS and Jurgen was pissed.
So I guess poaching in MLS is easier than poaching in the World Cup? I'm going to hate Wondo for a while.
Dude, the ball just didn't bounce kindly for him. It's what it is. He isn't the only striker to not time his shot properly or connect properly. We've seen strikers from every major European and South American league miss shots in front of goal. It happens. Doesn't devalue what Wondo does in MLS.
I don't know if I'll ever forgive Wondo. He never should have been brought in ahead of Boyd or Donovan.
I don't know soccer really really well, but enouh to follow more than effectively. The US looked outmatched most of the tournament. They'd have 2-3 minute great bursts but seems to struggle relative to their competition as a whole with keeping possession. Not just from today but all the time, Tim Howard seems to be the only clear world class player on the squad. Is what it is. It's a very entertaining sport... If the obvious lack of scoring as a whole can make it like watching people just run around for 90 minutes. In certainly would watch more regularly if I had any clue how the Euro leagues worked... Or even better if the US leagues were more "watchable" - be it better players or just more of a push to follow and watch. I'll likely fall back to not caring much!
Belgium substitution plus multiple faking injuries by their team, FIFA has been screwing the US with stoppage time all tournament so its not a surprise, first period of ET didn't have nearly the same amount of stoppages and they add 3 minutes.
Gedi isn't American.Yet. Some good young players coming through but they're still U-17/U18. The class above them is decent. Nothing spectacular. Emerson Hyndman is one to watch in the next 2 or 3 years as he will probably break through at Fulham this season and is a solid central midfielder. A couple of Mexican-Americans plying their trade in Mexico if Jurgen wants to recruit them. Also even though this young kid just signed w/the wrong team imo, watch for Joe Gyau. That's a decent right midfielder there. Two in MLS that if they get citizenships sorted will probably be in the next cycle are Kekuta Manneh and Darlington Nagbe. A number of decent players but no one spectacular...yet.
Good showing overall. Tim Howard was a beast. New guys were good. Belgium was a quality side. Got out of 1st or 2nd hardest group. We do have a long way to go to consistently play at the same or better level than teams like this though. We're pretty good at getting the ball to the overlapping man on the wings and that was a nice ball by Bradley to Green, but in general, the short passing game in the box is nonexistent and the through balls aren't available or lack the right touch. We also tend to lose the air battle. I am hopeful for the future though! USA in 2018!
Dont fall back on it breh. Just come into the Euro threads and Jontro, Yung-T, Rox, etc will help you sort out which Euro team to follow and develop interest in a league. Come on, you know u want to...
Uh, by "minnow nations" you don't mean in terms of the nations standing on the soccer stage right? You mean in terms of political and economical status?? If so then at some point I hope you let it go and realize that has nothing to do with how good a national team is or can be.
