That is because we are the big dog, if the USA gets through to the Quarterfinals - it will be the top two CONCACAF teams getting through - and would be quite a nice achievement for the region.

They might have a better chance going through AFC. Winning OFC means nothing.

It was the same when Mexico was the top dog. They just hate the USMNT for multiple reasons - historical, cultural, etc.

The only way Mexicans might - and I stress might - root for the USA is if we win the next two games and meet Holland. Something tells me the hatred for our team will still prevent that though.

My point is that the UEFA teams generally hate each other. So do the CONMEBOL teams, etc etc. This cheerleading for teams just because they are in our confederation is a very bizarre US thing... Reminds me of Aggies chanting "SEC! SEC!" even though those same SEC teams are their rivals now.

UEFA teams can afford to hate each other. They get enough spots in the WC to do that. They don't get underrated by CONMEBOL teams.

Whereas CONCACAF, AFC, CAF teams can support each other because they know CONMEBOL and UEFA teams treat them like little siblings and not equals. So I see know problem with rooting on the continental brethren.

Meant to also add, I understand if some fans can't root for their main continental rivals but it also shouldn't be an issue if some fans support their continental rivals progressing. It only helps CONCACAF, CAF, AFC in the long term.

Same situation in East Asia. Korea and Japan are the two world cup teams. I am guessing 80% of Japanese wanted the Korea team to go 0-3. And 99% of Koreans hoped the Japanese team would not be able to score one single goal.

If any USMNT fan feels that the extra half qualifying slot the confed. might get is worth a) rooting for a Costa Rica team that did everything possible to screw our team over after the Snowclasico, or b) a Mexico team whose fans throw bottles at US fans' routinely; they are idiots.

Having spent the group stage in Brazil, I experienced a Mexican fan contingent down there second only to the US in numbers from non-neighboring countries. They made no secret of their hatred for the US, cheered for anyone playing against the US, and talked **** the entire time. This camaraderie is very one-sided. Cheering for them under any circumstance is laughable.

The US needs to keep playing the best, and learning to beat the best, to keep growing. Cheering on/hoping for the success of teams that hate us, just so we get a slightly better shot at qualifying in the future, is weak.

Exactly. Mexicans are extremely jealous of the US' role as the big dog in CONCACAF. They hate us.

I have no problems rooting against mexico. They are the team in professional sports I dislike the most. Way more than the cowboys and jazz (mostly because both of them have become irrelevant). I'm still a little disappointed in Johannson and Zusi. I particularly enjoyed it yesterday that it was Marquez that f***ed up and gave the pk as I just do not like him and put him up there with Karla Malone for all time villains.

I don't have any feelings towards Costa Rica. I don't care for their fans and that sh**hole of a stadium they play in should be condemned and banned from any FIFA matches. I just don't dislike them as much as I dislike mexico.

Meh, I understand how you and some fans feel. The rivalry means more. I just don't feel a need to blame the Mexican fans that root for the US as well(a small small number of them lol and prolly all US born of Mexican heritage) or the US fans that root for Mexico.

    It's all good though.

I'm 38, out of shape due to a torn quad that won't heal, and I think I could take Mertersacker on the run.

You hand an intact and world class team to Löw and he destroys it with his dumbazz decisions!

Algerians have been very impressive so far.

But the Germans will score and win the game in the typical German way.
