Why not? People obviously saw his big shots in the playoffs.

If you need a shooter, why wouldn't you go after a young, unrestricted, cheap guy like him?

What's the cap hold on Daniels now?

No I'm agreeing with you actually. Fans THINK moves like this mean there is definitely something in the works, but it doesn't actually mean that. It means they are making sure they are in the game and that's it.

The Scola amnesty is a perfect example. The Rockets thought they had a strong chance at Dwight that year but needed to get rid of Scola to make it work. They ended up falling short and lost Scola for no reason (not that it made much difference.)

It doesn't matter what his cap hold is. If the Rockets are signing Melo, they will first renounce Daniels' rights first to clear all his money, sign Melo, and then re-sign Daniels again.

Of course, the Rockets may be sabatoged by some other team who offers more then the minimum. But the odds of that happening is incredibly small. And certainly the risk is worth it when you're signing Melo.

I would add that it thinks they have good enough odds in the game that the move is worth it.

No. The rule is 125% of previous salary or his minimum + $200K.

His offer will be $1,016,482 and this costs the Rockets $200K of cap space.

Wait what? This move will cost them cap space? I guess technically not no matter what because if they end up getting Melo they will fully renounce him anyway most likely to get down to the empty roster charge.

Yes, it will cost them space and means they can't trade him. Probably true with Melo or LeBron and renouncing.

Is he considered a RFA? If not, his FA rights don't really matter anyway.

Interesting they chose Daniels and not Covington or Cannon or Dmo. Since his salary was league min. My guess is they choose him because They only have to pay him one year earlier. Where as anyone else has multiple years left on current rookie contract.

He's restricted. Morey's putting out a qualifying offer. But we don't have his bird rights, so we can't offer him more than the minimum if we're over the cap. We also run the risk of being Asiked with the poison pill... assuming he's worth it in the first place.

Overall, this is a non-storry. 99.9% chance he returns next year on a minimum contract.

Canaan's 2nd year is guaranteed. They cannot just waive him.
Covington's different. His contract is simply not guaranteed, as opposed to a team option. The Rockets can decide on whether to retain him at any time before the agreed time to guarantee his contract. Which I'm guessing will be much later in the year.
DMo had his option picked up already.

You are seeing this news regarding Daniels because among all those players, he's the one with the team option. Hence the Rockets must make a decision before July 1st.

Damn, this surprises me but does make some sense. I hate the idea that we could lose this guy and I was really poking forward to watching him in the Summer League games.

there will definitely be teams willing to offer him. I could see Hinkie wanting him

What may be an interesting play here is Daniels just playing out the qualifying offer and becoming a UFA next year, rather than signing a long term deal where the Rockets won't give him more than minimums anyway. If he believes in himself and his spot in the Rockets rotation, that would probably be worth the risk. If not, he should lock up some guaranteed money and hedge his bets against being push out of the rotation or injury.

I'd probably side with accepting and playing out the qualifying offer, if I were him. You get $200K more and get UFA in 2015.

I thought this would make him an RFA?

13, 14 M in year 1 is near max money for Parsons and would not be matched.

No state income tax, 12 M in year 1 is more than enough. I hope that it's closer to 10M in year 1.
