Just curious about what you guys think.

Say, for example, Kevin Pelton went into the "way-back machine" to offer advice to MJ, would Michael have been even better?

Is there really anything MJ could have been better at?

I think analytics would have made him worse.
Analytics is all about adding and substracting elements from the game, if you told MJ he needs to stop shooting threes and needs to shoot more from the right side, because that's where he's most efficient at, it would make him more predictable. The key to his dominance was his amazing versatility and ability to adapt to every situation..

You don't mess with a good thing.

Well, for one thing, for much of Michael's career he took less than 1 3 pointer per game. For his career, he only averaged 1.7 per game.

In addition, Michael's 3 point % is .327 well below the .400 most analytics guys are looking for out of a sg.

Clyde would tell him to always dunk it instead of attempting layups, so that would increase MJ's fg% by a few percent and make him even more dangerous.

Your thread is about analytics helping him, him attempting so few 3pt per game means he understood this himself and focused on more efficient shots.

I like your video on MJ, it is VERY revealing. So basically you have MJ on one side and the analytics guys on the other side, who are you going to side with?

Agreed. MJ's weakness (if you can call it that) was his below average 3 point shooting. Although I don't think .400 is what most people expect, that's considered great shooting. Around .360 is good for a star guard.

It would not have. What made jordan so great was the range on his post up. He could hit that turn around jumper darn near from the free throw line And be just as effective as a lot of guys down on the block. The frustrating thing with him was....you played good d, had him shooting from a bad spot on the floor, but it did not matter.

I feel like if you told Michael that he'd have the "F&*^ you" mentality and he'd do the opposite of what you said and excel at it.

Apparently y'all are only thinking offense. Simple defense tips would have helped become even better on D. Chicago used to spend a ton of time putting together film for each player to watch before big matchups. MJ studied. Replace or augment that with analytics... he's that much scarier.

Morey would have told MJ to stop taking inefficient midrange jumpers and turn him into Steve Novak with a basketball.
