Well there is really nothing out there that resembles Attack on Titan. Now in terms action adventure anime there are a few. If I stay away from shonen-fighting style anime, I can think of: Deathnote Full Metal Alchemist(Brotherhood) or not, I thought both were good Sword Art Online Log Horizon for starters.
What kind of resemblance are you looking for? I gave a list to another poster on the previous page that don't resemble AoTs theme, but has great characters and plot. If you want gore and action: -High school of the dead is the only one I can think of that have monsters killing/eating people. -Elfen lied, but there aren't any action scenes. Just gore and paranormal Another also falls into the same category as Elfen lied -Samurai 7 has awesome action and strategized warfare. Not very good with this genre
I would strongly recommend Knights of Sidonia. It is darker in theme than most anime. Basically an attack on Titan in space - humanity on the run from monsters that we don't understand that have all but wiped us out. Currently licensed to be released only on Netflix though season 1 has already finished in Japan. The release date for the first season on Netflix is July 4th. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=15496
Can anyone recommend me a show like SAO and Accel World? A virtual reality MMO type? On a side note, I think I need to give AOT a second chance. I was kinda meh about it when i first watched it but I keep on hearing others say they love it. I think watching it with a friend of mine that would not stop complaining about Mikasa ruined it for me lol
You could try Btooom! or Log Horizon. I haven't watched Btooom!, but Log Horizon was a disappointment after starting off in an interesting manner. If you don't mind low action, you could also try an old series, .hack/sign.
If you like bleak and gory anime: Gantz Berserk None were completed though... Elfen Lied is also pretty bleak and gory. For a bleak and depressing thriller (not that gory or action packed), Monster has a decent fan following, but I didn't personally care for how it was completed. I read the manga out of impatience, but watching it animated was still pretty sad.
Knights of Sidonia is p.cool. It's a sci-fi take on the whole humanity fighting a losing battle thing. Its by Nihei Tsutomu, an awesome manga artist (Blame! and Biomega). He studied architecture, so check it out if you're into cyberpunk designs and settings. His manga work is a lot darker, for obvious reasons. The show itself is totally CG, which kinda put me off, but its actually well done.
Just finished Knights of Sidonia. Loved the style and action in Knights of Sidonia, but I found the characters really disappointing. Still it was worth it for the animation... the mood though isn't for everyone. Berserk the anime is about 1/4 of the manga and is obviously unfinished. In fact the manga writer is like the George RR Martin of Manga as this series started in 1990, with no finish date in site and has only been periodically and sporadically updated. However if you choose to watch the anime, the 3 films are incredible (pretty much covers the 25 epi anime series minus a few things). Lots of action, gore, violence and cool characters. Gantz - the manga was completed this past year, the anime however is not complete. Its a good anime/manga if you just want action, style and gore as the story gets pretty nonsensical and ridiculous the further it goes IMO (manga). SAO - Loved this anime, found everything from the World, characters, action, story, drama and romance enjoyable. Huge fan of the setting/world building here. I did enjoy the first arc much more than the second tho. Only complaints was wishing the story was longer so that the world/story was more fleshed out. So instead of jumping ahead a few months etc, we actually saw them progressed every week, basically just wished the story progression was stretch out a lot more. Easily my second favorite anime after AOT last year. Log Horizon - The good, it is similar in some ways to SAO and unlike SAO they story is very detailed and its world is explored in depth. The bad - I thought it started of great, but found the middle and latter part of the story to be pretty dull. The stakes and drama in this anime also seemed very low.
Despite being an avid Anime fan since I was a kid, I've held back in watching Hunter x Hunter for the longest time. The characters simply didn't look interesting and YuYu Hakusho pretty much was all I watched back then. After watching the first couple of episodes a few nights ago though, I've become absolutely hooked. I actually slept at 4AM 'coz the episodes simply got better and better! I may be a zombie right now in the office but man that was worth it! I've watched some of the popular anime lately like AoT and Gurren Lagann but I've enjoyed watching HxH a helluva lot more.
Yeah! Another fan to talk HxH with. You notice how HxH characters have similarities with yu yu Hakusho characters? i.e. Kurapika = Kurama, killua = high, leorio = kuwabara, gon = Yusuke. Love that. What episode you on? I agree with all your statements. I recently started from the beginning again just to compare how gon has grown throughout the series and I ended up watching the entire Hunter exam arcin one sitting which is about 20 episodes.
Thank you guys. Complex characters and good storyline woud do it for me. Some human feasting would be bonus.
LOL figures. I dunno if you noticed but in one of the episodes, an earring of one of the characters there was Pu from YuYu Hakusho. Not sure what episode # I left it at but recent events were: Spoiler Zoldyck going against the Troupe Leader... Best episode I've seen so far was the fight between Uvo and Kurapika though... Kurapika just went totally HAM that my jaw just dropped.
I think it was a cellphone Keychain from that girl who writes up contracts, but yes I remember that You're further along than I thought. Kurapika is a beeeeast, too bad he's got a major restriction that makes him useless.
So I started Yowamushi Pedal last week based on the recommendations here and I wasn't disappointed. It's fun and very easy to watch. It's so easy to watch that I have already completed the series, including the finale that was released today. I think I liked it as much if not even slightly more than Kuroko's Basketball. So thanks for the recommendation guys, it was worth well worth it. Man what a cliffhanger for a season finale though! It is coming back right?
Comes back in October 2014! About to watch the finale so I might double post after the episode.. So excited!
I got to the end and I was like... WHAT!!! That's where you're going to stop! So glad that I only have to wait a few months for more.
Finally got around to Mirai Nikki: Future Diary. It's damn good, gets messed up and it's full of psychopaths, but I like the story. I'd say it's like eden of the East, but with killing and psychopaths.
