Austin's case is really tragic but interesting from medical perspective. If you told any medical student about a super tall and lanky male with history of retinal detachment as a child, they will tell you Marfan's. This leads me to believe that the family might have known about his condition?

As a medical student, I can tell you that Marfan's is associated more with Lens Dislocation, but you can have retinal detachment as well. I feel for the young man, but the risks to his heart are just enormous.
