No. Rumor from Sam Amick is that Morey already has deals (plural) lined up but is waiting to pull the plug in order to hear a commitment first from a star free agent, or something along those lines.

My guess is a deal has already been agreed to that was conjured up before that other GM knew that Morey was getting this particular pick. Id assume at best, Morey wouldn't give up anything more than their own 1st, but you never know. If you view it in the context of Morey trading Asik & Lin without giving up any of their own picks or other assets & being able to sign a star player than its a win either way you look at it in a worst case scenario.

Generally, first round picks roll-over for a number of years and then get extinguished or turned into second round picks.

It will be worthless in the Melo/LeBron/Bosh pursuits, because the Rockets will have to renounce that TE before they have the capspace to sign any of them. They can't use it, since all of those players will make more than $8.3mil.

However... It can become very useful if the Rockets target is Kevin Love. Because the TE allows us to add an extra crappy contract from the Wolves, like Kevin Martin's, without sending money back. If the Wolves are looking to dump salary, that TE can add a lot of crap back from them.

It's crazy how liberal the Pelicans are with their first-round picks. I'm shocked to see them deal a likely lottery pick two years in a row. Daryl Morey's proven how valuable lottery picks can be with instances like the Harden trade and Dell Demps continues to give them away like candy! I bet Sam Hinkie called his old Master Morey to remind him how taking draft picks from the Pelicans is like taking candy from a baby. Don't be surprised to see that pick included in a major deal in the near future.

No, we don't. It all depends on whether the cap space is needed or not.

Right now Morey is stockpiling assets and ammo for a big trade. Moving Asik makes sense as the pick is highly liquid (and valued by just about everyone). Asik has value, but his landing spots were very well defined (and that market can change if those teams fill that need).

I suspect Morey will hold onto Lin until his cap space is required or he's needed as a contract piece in a larger trade. If Morey doesn't get his big targets or Lin is not required to execute the trade, I fully expect that he'll hold onto Lin as his contract is an appreciating asset from this point forward.

By mid-season the other team will only be looking at $7.5M vs $15M in cash outlay. And at the end of the season he will be a net positive asset as either a member of the Rockets rotation at market value, or as a movable rotation player in a S&T.

Moving Lin for pure cap space would not only consume picks and/or players, but would weaken the depth of the roster.

IE, you move Lin if you absolutely need to clear the cap space (have someone who will sign), or you need his contract to complete a S&T.

Otherwise, you hold onto the pick (which improves even more next year if the Pelicans pick doesn't trigger) and Lin for potential roster depth and as a potential trade component.

Somebody has probably stated this, but Morey has said that improving the teams that he is negotiating with is not something he is particularly worried about. If he can improve the team he will.

Well I do somewhat agree with you as Morey apparently already has multiple deals in place for Lin, according to Amick. But, that poison pill, its hard to swallow for any team. Maybe if you are a team like Raptors, Lin + Pelicans pick for Lowry? Now that doesn't sounds too bad. Remember there were more LOF than Raptors fans in that stadium when he hit that game winner.

But I don't think we are in the "develop young talent" mode anymore. That would be a waste of 1-2 years of H&H prime. We are in win now mode, so im sure Morey is on the phone trying to lure GMs with this pick as sweetner. Maybe that pick + Harden as rumored? Melo+Lebron? I doubt it. But everyone is an asset to Morey. The man is pure evil.

Yes, the way things have unwound the last few days has me wondering if the plan is to make an all out push for Love tomorrow. The #1 pick with limited protection, the timing of the trade exception.. It opens up the MLE and LLE if we do a sign and trade for Love.

I just have a hard time believing we can make a good enough offer for Love (Parsons/multiple #1's/Jones) and that Love wants to go to Houston over staying on the West coast.

With all the overblown James to anywhere but Miami talk, people don't realize how big a gain Kevin Love would be.

    Howard
    Love
    Who cares
    Harden
    Beverley

If Minnesota takes our offer, it will be because we can help them dump salary. So "who cares" probably becomes Budinger and/or Brewer.

And yes, I am with you that if the Rockets can make Love to Houston, I will gladly pass up the chance for LeBron. That is, unless LeBron literally promised the Rockets that he'll sign here.

Honestly I think getting Love right now is a low percentage play.

My impression from what I've read about Flip Saunders is he's hard headed enough that I think he'll try to hold onto Love and try to convince him to stay.

GSW basically offered them a king's ransom and they're still holding out (IE, not in a hurry to move him).

If we get Love, great. I just don't think it's probable.

Jrue has a cap hit of $33 mill in committed salary. Lin has a cap hit of $8.3 million or so for 1 year. Their stats are very similar, but Lin has managed to get his numbers with fewer minutes played and having had to play both as a starter and reserve and alongside a ball dominant #2 guard. From NO's standpoint, Lin is a much better value than Holliday.
