No, the 33 mil that they have doesn't include Dirk getting paid. They have room for one max plus Dirk if he cuts his pay in half. That said, their team is pretty weak, so what max player wants to go there?

So the Mavs need a point guard now? Lin to Dallas?

Good god, how does Phil Jackson get so lucky??? Because of things just like this...great deal for the Knicks...

Who knows perhaps the Knicks will find a way to acquire someone of relevance to actually try keeping Melo in New York.

In regards to the Mavs, I get trying to get Chandler back. I guess a trio of Dirk, Chandler, and a max offer to a free agent might be hella tempting...better than what the Rockets can currently offer...Lebron is paying attention. argh..

Now all the Mavs have to do to make Melo sign is trade Dirk for Amare. He'd feel right at home. Monta is a reasonable facsimile for JR Smith.

If they're smart they should divvy up that max slot. Unlike the Rockets who can make almost-max room AND have great players and depth, the Mavs have nothing.

    Chandler $14 mill
    Dirk $10 mill (assumption)
    Lance Stephenson $7 mill
    Ellis $8 mill
    Lowry $10 mill

    Nick Young $4 mill
    Felton $4 mill
    Brandon Wright $5 mill

You still have $2 million to parlay into scrub talent

At least you have options rather than throwing $20-$23 million to one player and get bounced out in the 1st round.

I know. I'm not sure 'hey check out who's already here' is a good selling point for Melo.

they are gonna make a push to get Lebron. If i know Cuban, he is gonna go all out for Lebron in Dallas...too bad Lebron will see the window of 1 year and say no thanks.

Does Melo like Chandler, and would this help the Mavs in recruiting him?

Dallas is shoring up their roster with championship pedigree.

Chandler has credibility and he's still not far off his prime years.

Cuban is going to swing for the fences, so you know he's gunning for Melo or Lebron and can show them Dirk, Chandler, Monta Ellis, Rick Carlisle and lots of cap space on top of no state tax.

Also, Calderon is a ball dominant PG so changing PG to more of a defensive guard is playing directly to Lebron.

Always have to be careful with Cuban... he's missed on Dwight and DWill (lucky for him), but he's no dummy and a dangerous X-factor in FA.

Dallas was #3 in offensive rating and bottom 10 in defensive rating.
Calderon was their second worst defender. Ellington(only 9 min per game) was their worst defender.

Either they're targeting FA point guards(Lowry) or they're going to give the job to Devin Harris(assuming they resign him) who is a much better defender than Calderon and a capable scorer(career per 36 of 16pts).

Dalembert averaged only 20 min per game while Chandler played 30 min when healthy.

Yeah they had to take a bad contract and lose Calderon's 3P shooting, but Dallas improved defensively.

I guess Cuban's learned nothing from the NBA playoffs. Unless you have LeBron, you better have a pretty damn good point guard to survive:

    Tony Parker
    Steph Curry
    Damion Lillard
    Chris Paul
    Mike Conley
    Russell Westbrook
    Patrick Beverly

    Raymond Felton

When was the last time he was able to acquire an elite player in his prime?
