Cuban probably still regrets letting Chandler go and now thinks his team is close since they pushed the Spurs to 7.

He'll probably overpay for Marion and Vince too in an attempt to make a run with a bunch of old guys.

Point guards are easier to come by I guess.

I bet JR and Calderon are gone by the deadline.

NY going into the 2015 free agency with absolutely nobody on the pay roll might be scary.

Rondo, Aldridge, Love, Milsap, B.Lopez, A.Jefferson, D.Jordan, M.Gasol, E.Gordon, Afflalo, Ellis, Hibbert and Dragic are all free agents.

Could see them signing up to 4 of them, maybe even 5 if they pull off a miracle.

Makes you wonder why he didn't resign him when he had the chance after the first championship.

Mavs give up approximately 14 million in salary and take 18 back. Still allowing 30 million to sign both Melo and Dirk. That allows Dallas to give 20 million to Melo and Dirk about 10 million a year.

I didn't think about this earlier but.

Felton (insert better point guard but friend of Melo)
    Ellis
    Melo
    Dirk
    Chandler.

    That's a really good starting 5.

As crazy as Cuban is, I don't disagree with his assertion. The Mavs were the only team to push the champeens to the brink of elimination. Tyson Chandler may be older, but he knows the system and has solid chemistry with Dirk and HC Jim Carey. Beyond that, I liked Calderon, but the Mavs must believe that Devin Harris' late-season surge was no fluke.

One thing to watch is how much Dirk, Marion, Carter and Harris re-sign for.

Damn. If they play it smartly they could be good.

Jose Calderon would actually be the perfect fit for this current Rockets team.

Calderon may have suitors, but someone still has to trade for JR Smith. I wouldn't hold my breath

Mavs have loads of cap room. It's easier to get a PG upgrade than a C upgrade.

Really, how many available Centers are there in this year's FA that are better than Tyson Chandler in terms of skills plus experience plus familiarity?

And scoring was their last concern last season. They had a top 5 offense. Their main issue is on the defensive end of the ball, and the easiest way to do that is add a competent Center and then pick up another PG in FA or through trade (since a lot of PG's defend better than Calderon).

    It works for both teams.

And being a Knicks fan, it's nice to finally see a trade that wasn't one sided in the other team's favor.

Fair trade all the way around.

Relying on that group of washed up dudes to carry you to a championship is like relying on winning the lotto to fund your retirement.

As I am a huge Cuban fan (not ashamed to call him a role model for me) I can answer this.

Before the Ellis signing last year he was asked (I think at the MITsloane conf) about the value of contracts that arnt min or max in the nba.

He went on to say that he agrees with the general perception of them being the most valuable contracts however when 29 other teams are only trying to get these contracts some times it's better to zig rather than zag.

So you can see the mavs trying to go against the curve and bring in the contracts (the 2-12 million range).

It makes sense to me and this moves further illustrates it.

Basically because of the situation they are in he is making the anti morey team

    Melo: $20 million
    Dirk: $10 million
    Tyson: $14 milllion
    Ellis: $8 million
    Felton: $4 millon

    Wright: $5 million

That's $61 million, leaving them under the salary cap, not having the MLE, and the rest of the roster/bench to fill.

True, even the Spurs needed an infusion of youth (Patty Mills and Kawhi).
All I'm saying is that it's pretty important to have a coach + FO that recognizes and respects what it takes to assemble a champion.

Team doesn't need a bench. Monta Ellis have it all.

He's only saying this because no big name free agent wants to sign with Dallas so of course he has to zig.

It worked well for them last year because they had veterans at each position but the fact of the matter is that you need some youth to go along with your vets. Otherwise, they'll flame out early in the playoffs even if they do have a Top 3 head coach.

Can you even spread $2 m across 7 guys? Theyd have to trade someone or do some tricky cap manuevering just to fill the roster.

Unless the Mavs got some sort of Bird Rights for Carter, Marion, Harris or Blair, they're going to have a hard time trying to fill out their roster AND sign Carmelo.

Any big free agent is a pipe dream for Cuban and Dallas to be honest.
