I use my Nexus 7 as mainly a reader. That size is similar to the original Kindles and a paperback. I have a light laptop if I ever think I need to do something more work intensive.
The Nexus 7 FHD is pretty damn nice. My girlfriend has one and every time I look at the screen, my face melts, but I would prefer the LG GPad 8.3" GPE because of the mSD slot.
Seriously. Android is great and all if you want customizeability and I guess want to be seen as techy. (We can all argue who is more hipster and douchey here. Both sides exhibit traits). Unless you are a programmer you really wouldn't be able to fully take advantage of the freedom Android devices would give you. There are many people that buy Android for this purpose but yet don't even know how to root their phones. But the one thing Android will never beat iOS devices in are in fragmentation and support. iOS devices get supported for a long time. My iPad Mini was released in 2012. I have had iOS 6, iOS 7, and eventually iOS 8. 3 Years of support. How many Android devices can say the same? Likewise there are limited products, developers are able to code for maybe three different specs rather than a wide range of of them. Also with that lack of fragmentation, updates are timely and you don't have to wait for years and years waiting for either your manufacturer and/or carrier to coordinate and push out updates. If you are looking for a guaranteed (almost) three year investment in a tablet with full support then purchase a current model iPad. ------- Alternatively, I'm not a Apple fanboy here. Android has their fair share of pros as well. For instance Android flagship tablets just flat out blow Apple devices out of the water. That customizabiility I mentioned allows you to fully take advantage of your devices hardware after a root and its really noticeable. Android devices also have the benefit of a cheaper market for developers. I believe its a one time fee to develop apps in contrast to Apple's annual fee. Official Google products that run Android are also comparable in support to Apple's products. Timely updates, lack of fragmentation in a sense, etc. Also Android has widgets. This is huge to be honest, Apple is stupid for not allowing widgets on its home screen. Also in most cases nearly all Android tablets are cheaper than iOS tablets. Also one thing to note, this isn't a problem if you root and it certainly isn't too big of a factor but most manufacturers that use Android gives you their custom version of Android, kind of like a Custom ROM except that its a mess, filled with bloatware, and generally awful compared to stock Android or a custom Android ROM from XDA developers. ----------- Windows tablets may look badass but for that price you might want to buy a laptop instead...

I actually have a Galaxy Tab Pro as well. Wish it was running stock Android instead of Samsung's bloated TouchWiz.
Just checked XDA. There are some AOSP ROMs available if you're into that kind of thing. Running a custom AOSP ROM on my Note 3 without major issues myself. Only thing is NFC doesn't work. No biggie for me.
