In the market for a tablet...

Mighty fine. I don't see why people won't just buy these convertibles instead of an expensive tablet. You can do so much more with a laptop with much better specs as well. I don't have a convertible laptop, but it is touchscreen enabled and I find using Windows 8.1 a joy with it.

 

I bought my Surface Pro 3 on Friday and been loving it. MS killed it this time. It does everything I want my tablet to do and I've been using all day today at work. I left my laptop in the car! It's more expensive but there is very little you need to compromise on this device.

If you want a tablet + laptop, shell out the extra $300. For now, nothing else compares.

 

For my limited needs (couch surfing, travel) small, thin, light, cheap... a Nexus 7 meets my needs.

 

What specs did you get?

I had the Surface Pro (1, I guess) and it was almost a perfect device. I am definitely getting the Pro 3 when I have the chance.

 

i5 128gb. I would have gotten the i3 but it isn't for sale yet. I've not a developer or gamer so I don't need power. I need to get some work done, I want a device for leisure stuff like reading and I want portability. Check, check, check. SP3 rocks for a tablet/laptop hybrid. /thread.

 

Your Nexus 7 isn't "small, thin, light" if you also carry a laptop when you need to get some real work done. That's why the extra $300 is worth it for me.

 

Actually, I agree. Though I'm not sure if you're serious.

I know its the "In" thing to do right now when it comes to downing Apple, and there are other legitimate options out there.... But for me, thier stuff just works. And does exactly what I need it to. I'll probably never give up my PC, but mobile and entertainment wise (Apple TV) I'm all in.

 

Good for you. Different strokes for different folks. I'd still prefer a smaller form factor in a tablet if it means carrying 2 devices. I don't do much traveling anyways.

 

For sure. I don't travel much anymore either but I must lug my laptop with me everyday. Not anymore.

But it should be noted that one SP3 is almost always cheaper than buying two devices. And one device is definitely lighter than two (assuming one is a laptop).

As an aside, I don't know why a man would want a 7-8" tablet. For a woman, it's easier to fit in her purse easier. But for a man, you still need a case so I find carrying an 8" tablet is no more convenient than my 10-12" tablet and now I get a bigger screen. (Plus with a Surface, I also get a totally functional keyboard.) But hey, to each his own.

 

Again it doesn't have anything to do with transporting it. 8" to me is a perfect combination of size and weight for reading/browsing one handed while sitting on the couch or walking around the house. It feels more convenient like holding a magazine with the cover folded back.

And I had a 13" laptop for 6 years. I couldn't wait to move on to a 15" since it's my main machine and I often don't have the convenience of hooking it up to a second monitor. I just got tired of the smaller screen real estate.

But I really am envious of people whom this Surface solves everything for. I imagine down the road smart phones will be so powerful we can plug them into different form factor monitors and this will all be even less of an issue.

 

If the Surface 2 had a decent resale value I would go up to the SP3. I don't see how anyone would get an iPad in its place. Even David Pogue, an admitted Apple fanboy felt the SP3 was a game changer.

 

I need to carry a large heavy laptop for work. Hence the desire for small and light.

 

Can someone please convince me to buy a SP3 over PC? I already purchased a lot of music on itunes, will that transfer over to SP3? What else is the SP3 useful for? Are there any deals out there where i can pay monthly for it? Thanks

I have an 8" Lenovo Miix 2 and it is fine. It was only ~$200 and I use it when I'm lounging around the house and don't feel like booting up my laptop or desktop to browse the internet. 8" is plenty big for that (much bigger than my Kindle Paperwhite).

It would make no sense for me to spend $800 on a 12" tablet in this situation.

 

Do any of you run something like Bluestacks on your Surface Pro (3 or earlier)?

 

You have a bit of a gender complex, huh? I didn't call it girly. I just said it doesn't fit in your pocket and I'm assuming most men don't have a purse.

SP3 isn't a replacement for a $200 tablet. It's a laptop. So that isn't an apt comparison. But should you buy a SP3, I doubt most folks would then spend an additional $200 for a tablet since it can do that too.

For me, I'd prefer to use my phone for casual browsing rather than carry an 8" tablet. My phone fits in my pocket.

As was stated, to each his own. I'm just conveying that the SP3 changes the game a bit. There has never been a product that successfully delivers the hybrid experience but I acknowledge it isn't for everybody.

7-8" tablets sell the best, so there must be some reason to have them.

 

I carried around my Dell Venue 8 Pro without a case everywhere with me. It even fits in my back pocket and front pocket as well although it's awkward to do so :grin: .

I used it in conjunction with my DSLR to show off my pictures to people instead of showing them on a small 3" LCD for example. Mostly, I use it to surf the innernets when I'm not on my desktop. I also have my Note 3, yet I prefer to surf on a bigger screen be it an 8-incher or a 10-incher or even one of my desktops at my house. My phone is my last resort to use for media/internet surfing like if I'm at work or somewhere I don't have a bigger device around.
