These vermin were once children who were brainwashed into their ideology and two of those mechanisms for brainwashing are propaganda and a lack of education. Killing them "all" does not terminate those mechanisms.

Nobody on this forum supports folks like ISIL. This is exactly what I mean by overreaction. Even more extreme than our horribly counterproductive reaction to 911 which has created more terrorists than it has eliminated..

The thinking on this post is a near mirror image of the ISIL.

I'd agree. But how to deal with people who are brainwashed? The underlying ideology is Islam (or a form of it), and it's well-funded and dangerous.

During WW II basso would have been slapping up posters like this around town because Roosevelt was a "socialist".

I think you have to guide the ideology into stamping itself out with education and by letting them see for themselves what it ultimately leads to for them. It's an evolution that has to take place. Meddling in their internal affairs is not going to work. It's really just going to feed their paranoia about your true motives.

It's tricky...you are saying "you have to guide the ideology" but at the same time you are saying you cannot meddle in their internal affairs because it will feed their paranoia.

How do you discuss the ideology of brainwashed people with brainwashed people without feeding their paranoia?

I don't have an answer. I would agree though, that the problem cannot be solved with military means. But that can also not mean that there isn't a point where you have to respond with military means and/or with strong resolve within our own societies anyway, when the ideology threatens our way of life.

90% of the people on this planet are brainwashed with religion myths. You deal with it by leaving them to it. Trying to tell them their myth is wrong and your myth is right will get you nowhere because you have a no more rational argument than they do.

And at this point it would be pretty hard for the US to even propose the rationality of a multicultural, secular, democratic way of governance because we are losing it ourselves.

It's sad but true, human beings are evolutionarily hard wired to coalesce into groups of shared interests. It's promotes the propagation of like DNA...me, my direct lineage (family), my kind. Even the high minded founding fathers were really promoting an economic advantage for themselves instead of England.

That would be fine if the myth was just something they believe in to explain life for them.

But if the myth manifests itself in aggression, intolerance and violence, then it doesn't only affect the people believing in the myth.

Then you cannot just "leave them to it" - because they don't "leave you to it". In fact, they murder you because you don't believe what they believe.

Fine, take the message of secular humanism, egalitarian democracy and shared economic prosperity and spread it to the four corners. Let me know how it goes, because I couldn't even get the neighbors on my block to buy in.

I said it before in this thread, the "religion" you so vilify is really just an organizational tool for an economic/genetic group. Terror is their strong suit in the competition for dominance and resources. The shared belief in the myth is a requirement to be included in the "group" to ensure your survival and prosperity. The vilification of Jews is the same thing, the economic prosperity of the group; people don't like that they are very good at it, very organized and closed as a system.

The myths are bullshart, the rituals are bullshart, I assume everyone including the priests knows it, and yet they persist, why?
survival, prosperity and the propagation of like genetic information

If you want to bother with them....

Most of them are lost and won't ever change. Your energy and resources is probably better spent focusing on the next generation. Military, necessary at time, also creates the next generation of crazies especially when viewed as the U.S. as not defender but as aggressor.

e.g. Afghanistan War was probably viewed initially as what we had to do to defend us. Iraq War was probably viewed as US begin the aggressor for all kind of reasons that can be used to recruit their youth to fight against us.

I said we just get as quickly to energy independent as possible and haul our ass out of that region. Leave it to them to work through their holy wars. Get involve when they ask for help for humanity reasons.

As I said, I don't have the answer. I don't know how to fix it.

...and prevent weapons sales to them.

It's not only education. It's not even "uplifting" an entire people out of an era like how we somewhat tried in Iraq.

Quite sobering to consider that cities in Egypt, Afghanistan, or Iran were more progressive and modern looking than they are today. War, corruption, and inept governance can do that to a people.

The stronger disconnect is that the people in the ME have been deluded into thinking of their cultural and spiritual superiority, but when confronted with acknowledging the rest of the world is either ahead or outpacing them their minds can't reconcile the problems they can fix on their own and either lash out with rage or internalize it with crippling consequences.

Compound this with the fact that political dissent carries the strings of extreme isolation and torture or a one way ticket to a radical "political group", there's a vacuum on individualistic activism towards the community. We've seen the limits of the Arab Spring. Governments in the ME have far more resources and energy devoted into clipping those movements by the knees then spraying them with bullets to confirm they're dead.

This blow to their collective worldview is probably why those highjackers were educated and above middle class rather than some cave dwelling AK47 wielding Hollywood stereotype.

So there isn't a magic bullet answer, and I don't think there will be as long as they have tremendous influence through energy and how they respond to Israel.

Some think that Bush blew up the World Trade Center. Of course, it's standard Marxist claptrap to run around assuming that everything in the history of the world occurred because of economics and that people and leader can't really be motivated by ideals or beliefs or something other than cold cash.

What are the ideals and beliefs that you feel led to the invasion?

Well some think calling stuff a "conspiracy" or "marxist" is a substitute for facts or rationale. :(

In reality some things that are not in the mainstream press are factless conspriacies and something are just not reported on.

The reopening of this pipeline was discussed as one of the pluses for Israel before the invasion of Iraq. Is that all it was about? Probably not. You were had if you think it was actually about wmd, desire for democracy in Iraq, concern for feminism etc.

FWIW I don't believe Bush blew up the World Trade Tower and I am not a birther.

Let's hear from Netanyahu in 2003.
