911 was used as an excuse to invade and occupy Afghanistan, side against the Taliban in a civil war and do whatever else was our objective. Instead of treating it as limited police operation to get Bin Laden we created more terrorists than we have killed. Iraq of course magnified the mistake ten times over and will go down as perhaps the greatest blunder in American history and one of the worst in world history in the last century or two. Our drone strategy and violation of their national sovereignty in Pakistan, Yemen etc. also creates more terrorists who hate us than we have killed. We can't lessen terrorism by consistently creating millions of folks who hate us more and more. Basically this is common sense. We should stop overreacting to real terrorists when they actually threaten the United States, which is actually relatively rare. Granted it is exciting/ scary and boosts news rating, much like local crime reporting, to speculate endlessly about possible terrorist scenarios, but this should not be encouraged. As we saw with Bush it can help your political career when you consciously try to scare the public over terrorism and propose even counterproductive policies as a solution. It is certainly a boost for the military industrial complex and the new homeland security/ surveillance complex. We should eventually consider a formal apology to the Muslim world and the people of Afghanistan,Iraq and other countries for our actions over there. We need to stop selling arms to all sides. We need to start following international war with respect to starting wars. Slowly these folks will stop hating us for our past actions and they will be able to focus on the large extent to which they cause their own problems. If they are insistent on a holy war among themselves there is not much we can do to stop it, and constantly supporting and selling arms to one side or the other or at times both sides at times, just creates more enemies for us needlessly. To make amends and be helpful when it is actually useful we should engage in large scale humanitarian/ rebuilding aid, on the gigantic trillion dollar level scale we spend on wars. Such massive spending without the goad of constant fear mongering over terrorism may lead to some resentment that we can't rebuild our own cities and neighborhoods, but we can use some of the trillions we waste on these wars to do that, too.
The only way to beat these animals is to eliminate them from the face of the Earth...of course there's always that issue of the 'Doctrine' that they follow, that somehow always seems to produce radical groups that want to see the infidel / Kufar eliminated or subjugated, but that's for another thread. Even the use of Nukes would be justified in this case...I'm pretty sure if Al-Queda & ISIS was removed from the gene pool, not many people would be quick to shed any tears. Yup, ISIS are pretty much just pirates, mercenaries taking advantage of the lack of order. But it's way more complicated than just saying you're going to go kill them all. They have local support and religious and tribal allies. They are embedded within the population. Action against them is tacit support for Shia over Sunni interest. The US is tired of endless war in the Middle east and tapped out paying for it. Civil wars are the ugliest and most entrenched wars. They are tar-babies for outside actors, once you get involved it's very hard to ever disengage.

Yes, because when someone suggests nuclear weapons as an option, suggesting that is a bad and immoral idea is "liberalism" and "cherrypicking". I call it being rational and having a moral compass.
