The problem is, even if the Rockets some how get the #8 pick, can the Rockets take back the same kind of bad contracts that the Warriors can? Lets say hypothetically the Rockets decide they are ALL in on Love and are willing to move almost all assets (Parsons to a third team), Lin and Asik and Jones and even Beverley if necessary...... To do that the Rockets need to move Lin and Asik to a team and take back LESS (alot less) salary, and then deal TJ and whatever they get for Parsons and multiple #1 picks to Minnesota for Love and Martin and Barrera. Parsons won't resign in Minnesota... so he has to be dealt. It makes it all VERY hard to do... and that is assuming that the Wolves do not get a dark horse candidate coming in and offering an absurd package.
Still not enough. When I said "one piece", i meant in addition to what we already have. TJones and Asik would be needed for their own values. If we just exchange one or both of them for the #8 pick, that's not enough. Then all we'd have is Lin, #8, DMo? Not enough. Boston is the real player here. With #6 and #17 in this draft, plus Olynyk and Sullinger, plus future picks, plus established players like Green and Bass.....they've got plenty of assets to offer all types of deals.
That "deal" is pure conjecture on my part. It was the third in a series of tweets about WHAT I WOULD DO if I were Flip Saunders and resigned to having to trade Kevin Love to Golden State. My point was that, while the primary pieces of a Love trade may very well be Love/Martin for Lee/Thompson (with the teams essentially swapping starting SGs and PFs), I would be looking to dump as much salary as possible on the Warriors. The Warriors have a $9.8M trade exception from the Richard Jefferson salary dump last July with the Jazz (which allowed for the Iguodala sign-and-trade). The Wolves could dump both Martin's and Shved's salaries into that trade exceptions, generating two trade exceptions for Minnesota in the amounts of $6.5M and $3.15M. By trading Martin/Shved separately, the Wolves could then send out Love/Barea for Lee/Thompson and still meet the salary matching rules. $29M out. $16M in. Again, I made up this trade. But that's probably what I'm asking for (plus a pick) from Golden State if I'm Flip Saunders. ***EDIT*** Now that I think about it, I believe the Warriors are HARD-CAPPED at the "apron" ($75.748M) until July 1, so any Kevin Love trade that involved a substantial salary dump onto the Warriors would likely not be able to be consummated until after the July Moratorium. If so, then it would need to happen ON July 10 (the first day after the Moratorium is over) since that is the expiration date of the Jefferson TPE. If so, then I don't think Martin and Shved would both fit into the Jefferson TPE (since both Martin's and Shved's salaries go up on July 1). Still, you get the drift about the means of dumping salary on the Warriors. But this also means a Kevin Love trade--even if "done" prior to the draft--very well might not be able to be officially consummated until July 10.
We can offer way better draft picks than the Warriors and Parsons > Thompson. Morey needs to get in on and steal Love away from them
Barea 2014-2015 $4,500,000 (expiring) Brewer 2014-1015 $4,700,000 2015-2016 $4,900,000 Love 2014-2015 $15,000,000 (expiring) Lee 2014-2015 $15,000,000 $15,700,000 Martin 2014-2015 $6,500,000 2015-2016 $7,000,000 2016-2017 $7,00,000 Klay T. 2014-2015 $3,000,000 (expiring) damn guess the downfall is we don't have a stop gap PF that would fill in for LOVE, didn't know Klay was on an expiring but maybe they feel he will resign, & seems like timberwolves want K.martins contract to be included in any deal. Not that bad of a deal if timberwolves got a pick also, they're getting rid of a lot of salary, getting out of some bad contracts and could possibly still have a chance to make playoffs. It's not like love took them to playoffs last year anyway. We have asik, parsons, Lin, jones, & pick but they have players at Many of those positions already.
if we're winning 50 games a year and minny was struggling to .500 with the fuhrer, the better draft picks are going to come from minny, me thinks. but then again some though asik, by himself, could land LA so there is that.
Trade Harden for Love. Clear cap room and sign Lebron. New big 3.....Howard/Love/Lebron That would be sick.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Still several teams pursuing Kevin Love who don't believe Minnesota's Flip Saunders is in a deal-making mode -- yet.</p>— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) <a href="https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA/statuses/479752954912583681">June 19, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Could we attempt the same thing? Something like Asik to 76ers for their #10 pick, thus generating an $8.3 million TPE. Then, in two trades send.... Houston's TPE for Budinger ($5 million) and Shved ($3.2 million) Lin, TJones, DMo, #10 pick, #25 pick, 2016 and 2018 picks for Love I don't know. I still think we're beat.
Would Morey actually give Parsons/Lin/Asik up and would Minny take it... not sure how the cap works, but I'm inclined to think something like this could happen.
Why not just consummate this as a single three-team trade rather than making separate deals and having to deal with TPEs? Either way, that trade would hypothetically work. But, as you admit, that offer would likely be topped by several other teams. (And I just don't see Hinkie giving up the #10 pick for Asik.)
Reports have been consistent lately in describing Minnesota's desire for players over picks. I think a deal like... Houston receives Kevin Love, Kevin Martin, Corey Brewer Minnesota receives Paul Millsap, Chandler Parsons, HOU 2015 & 2017 picks, Jeremy Lin, non-guaranteed contracts, cash Atlanta receives Omer Asik, Terrence Jones, HOU #25 ...would be a offer they would accept. Of course, the hang up is in finding a team with a need for Asik and a Paul Millsap type if the Timberwolves are not interested in Asik himself. Would Atlanta do this trade so early in the offseason?
Whether Parsons is a better basketball player than Thompson is debatable. Both are terrific young players. But the comparison here is not an apples-to-apples one. If traded at or prior to the draft, Parsons would represent to Minnesota either (a) a guy who will immediately be made a restricted free agent whose (potentially substantial) offer sheet will be matched and will be locked in long-term; or (b) a guy who will be on a dirt-cheap contract for one more season, only to hit unrestricted free agency the next summer, where there is no guarantee that he will want to stay in Minnesota. Meanwhile, Thompson still has one year left on his (cheap) rookie scale contract and will be a restricted free agent NEXT summer. Given their respective contractual situations, I think that Klay Thompson is *objectively* a better trade asset than Chandler Parsons.
Not only that, but I think Morey would rather keep Parsons and future picks and just trade the ATL package for Millsap (saving us assets and cap room for other guys).
I think Morey was waiting it out... but now has gotten the gears in motion. I don't want/expect to get love but being a facilitator is fine by me... just take Lin and/or Asik off our hands. It's about Melo and Lebron.
