Are we just gonna pretend that Randy Bullock isn't still our kicker?

Yeah, Zuerlein was the kicker I wanted that year, but I knew they'd take the Aggie instead. He's still not a terrible kicker despite a rough rookie year and it's nice to have someone who can get touchbacks at least most of the time.

He was making "hard ones" later in the season though.

Clutch gene is something you are born with.

Clutch = Justin Tucker, Adam Vinatieri

Unclutch = a bunch of kickers that have bounced around or are out of the league

then there are a handful of guys that are in between

Bullock so far is in the unclutch group. I wouldn't bet on him getting out of it.

No, "clutch" is a statistical anomaly that superstitious fans romanticize.

When faced with a choice between a Rice guy and an Aggie, always take the Rice guy due to intelligence.

And I'm willing to bet that both of them would have struggled if put into the same situation that Bullock was put into.

not for kickers, or for sports in general.

when was the last time you had to shoot a free throw to tie the game in the 4th versus one that's in the first quarter?

"Choking" can happen, but the problem is that for the most part we're talking about a really small sample and if there happens to be a good result, we call that "clutch" and if there happens to be a bad result we call that "choking". With a large enough sample, most people will end up right around their averages.

Also, once players start to get a reputation based on success or failure in small samples, people start to ignore anything that goes against that reputation.

Inconvenient fact: Bullock kicked better in the NFL than the Rice kid did last year in college.

    So...

Want to quote Major because I think it's important. Even moreso for a guy in his 1st year kicking in the NFL.

Kickers in the NFL suffer from such tiny sample size issues...I'd wager to say that he deserves another shot. David Akers had a worse season in 2007 (similar 75%, but 1-6 from 40-49 yds compared to 12-17 for Bullock, and 1-4 from 50+ similar to Bullock). With such small samples, especially when scrutinizing within distances, things can fluctuate year to year. Akers happened to be lucky enough to have that season in the middle of his career whe nhe already had a track record. Hopefully Bullock can make this a blip also

Well, it is harder to kick on a college field, so the inconvenient fact is also an irrelevant fact.

LOL, what? You need to use some kind of sarcasm font for a post like that.

I'd take the UT kicker the Ravens have.

Well, the hashes are wider in college, so the angles have more an effect. A 45 yard attempt from the hash in college is a harder kick than a 45 yarder from the hash in the NFL. That said, comparing apples to apples, Bullock did better in college than Boswell.

There is a lot more pressure kicking professionally, but even if you discount that, Bullock was better in college also. So...

I'm hoping that Boswell will beat out Bullock. Boswell has a very strong leg. I see kickers in the NFL make field goals beyond 50 yards on a regular basis now days. I don't think Bullock has the leg strength that Boswell does, so I'm hoping that Boswell can show he can make the routine 40 yarders so he will have him when we need to make a 55 yard field goal to win a game.

definte hard ones. i think he was just making FGs he should hit. he started making his FGs towards the end, when the season was already dead. How many pressure situations was he in those last few games?
