If you're going to name names, my list dwarfs yours.

Ricky Stanzi, TJ Yates, Nathan Enderle, Tyrod Taylor, Greg McElroy, Mike Kafka, John Skelton, Jonathan Crompton, Rusty Smith, Dan LeFevour, Joe Webb, Tony Pike, Levi Brown, Sean Canfield, Zac Robinson, Stephen McGee, Rhett Bomar, Nate Davis, Tom Brandstarter, Mike Teel, Keith Null, Curtis Painter, John David Booty, Dennis Dixon, Josh Johnson, Erik Ainge, Colt Brennan, Andre Woodson, Matt Flynn, Alex Brink, Jeff Rowe, Troy Smith, Jordan Palmer, Tyler Thigpen, Ingle Martin, Omar Jacobs, DJ Shockley, Stefan LeFors, Dan Orlovsky, Adrian McPherson, Derek Anderson, Luke McCown, Craig Krenzel, Andy Hall, Josh Harris, Jim Sorgi, Jeff Smoker, John Navarre, Cody Picket, Casey Bramlet, Matt Mauck, BJ Simmons, Bradlee Van Pelt, Seneca Wallace, Brian St. Pierre, Drew Henson, Brooks Bollinger, Kliff Kingsbury, Gibran Hamdan, Ken Dorsey, Rohan Davey, Randy Fasani, Kurt Kittner, Brandon Doman, Craig Nall, JT O'Sullivan, Seth Burford, Jeff Kelly, Roland Curry, Wes Pate, Chris Weinke, Jesse Palmer, Mike McMahon, AJ Feeley, Josh Booty, Josh Heupel, Tee Martin, Spergon Wynn, Todd Husak, Tim Rattay, Jarious Jackson, Joe Hamilton, Joe Germaine, Aaron Brooks, Kevin Daft, Michael Bishop, Chris Greisen, Scott Covington, Moses Moreno, Danny Wuerffel, Pat Barnes, Mike Cherry, Chuck Clements, Tony Graziani, Koy Detmer, Wally Richardson, Jeff Lewis, Danny Kanell, Jon Stark, Kyle Wachholtz, Chad May, Dave Barr, Steve Stenstrom, Jay Barker, Craig Whelihan, John Walsh, Doug Nussmeier, Jim Miller, Jay Walker, Steve Matthews, Glenn Foley, Gino Torretta, Alex Van Pelt, Craig Erickson, Casey Weldon, Will Furrer, Chris Hakel, Jeff Blake, Kent Graham, Bucky Richardson, Mike Pawlawski, T.J. Rubley, Ty Detmer, etc, etc, etc . . .

Don't pick out the exceptions to the rule and then pretend that they're not the exceptions.

Nobody is saying that QBs drafted in later rounds CAN'T become good players, just that in all likelihood they won't. And that teams don't wait that long to draft guys they project to be good starting NFL QBs. QBs that they HOPE could be good starters? Sure. But not ones they really and truly believe will be that good.

You draft a QB in the later rounds because you HOPE he does something productive in the league, not because you EXPECT him to.

The lottery ticket analogy is a good one. You don't buy one really expecting to win, but it's cheap enough that you think it's worth the cost on the off chance you might win.

You and meh make great points but it's possible O'Brien had Savage ranked as a top 3 quarterback and maybe the Texans waited until the 4th round to draft him because they didn't expect another team to draft Savage before that point. We don't know but it's possible.

Also, all those names you guys are throwing out go right out the window because O'Brien opened his mouth and said "there's not much separation between the quarterbacks." O'Brien has the "quarterback guru" tag so it doesn't matter when Savage was drafted the expectation of him being just as good as every quarterback that was drafted before him should be there. And if Savage doesn't turn out to be good _ O'Brien will have some explaining to do. Especially if one of the quarterbacks that was drafted before him turns out to be good.

The odds aren't in Savage's favor but O'Brien does not have the benefit of that excuse... Unless the Texans have their eyes on a top pick next year which they should.

The chance of a late round QB becoming a good NFL QB is about the same as Lloyd Christmas's chances are of hooking up with Mary Swanson.

Just watching film on him, I'm starting to think more and more that he's just a let's see what happens QB.

He seems to have no escaping ability in the pocket, (I understand he's not the fastest and has a bad offensive line, but I'm talking about basic footwork to just move in the pocket).

I'm not sure if he doesn't feel the pressure or is just really fearless on pass rushes.

He has a tendency to make several questionable throws in 3rd down and red-zone. He tries to hard to make a play when there just isn't anything there.

    Positives:

    - Pretty quick release
    - Tight spiral
    - Obvious Arm Strength
    - Great size
    - He gives his receivers a chance at the ball (He trusts them to win the 50/50 balls)
    - Fearless in the face of a pass rush? (Not sure if its being fearless or he just doesn't feel the pressure)
    - Has pretty high upside as a pure pocket passer

    Negatives:

    - Forces the ball into situations there just isn't anything instead of making the easy pass
    - Footwork in the pocket needs a lot of improvement. You don't need to have the elusiveness of Russel Wilson, but you do need to be able to do simple things like take a single step in certain directions to make the defense miss (Luck is very very good at this).
    - Going through progressions
    - Mental fortitude? I'm not sure if he just feels this because of how bad his team is. When he's playing poor at the start, he will crash. But when he starts out well, he is amazing.

That's just my take, obviously I could be wrong about a lot of this.

IF you're going to name names, list all the QBs drafted in the first round that never became superstars or even stars but were at best just middle of the road NFL QBs and at worst were busts.

Im thinking he will need to play some this year so we can make sure we dont need to draft or pick up a QB next offseason. I think he can be our future QB someday.

One more day to showtime Savage. Time for you to make the Texans out to be right... And Teddy Bridgewater and David Carr seem to be giving you a lot of help...

I could care less if he was drafted in the 4th round.

The other QB's that you have listed in the fourth round and the percentages are worthless. If you watch Savage's college tape and Texans practice you'll notice that he has a bigger upside than any QB in the draft. Savage has the best combination of arm strength, accuracy, throwing motion, and size of any of the QB's in the draft. The only two negatives are foot-speed which I'm not worried about since he is a pocket passer and lack of recent game-time. Savage needs one year of carrying a clipboard and practice with the Texans for a year and next year he will be the unquestioned starting QB.
Savage was a gift in the fourth round. The other 31 teams made a huge mistake by not drafting him earlier.

Unfortunately he doesn't have a lot of college tape to go off of... And you're talking about practice. Lol... But I do think he has the biggest upside of the QB's on this team.

Tom Savage made mistakes of what a rookie does. I still rather start him over Fitzpatrick.

Savage will get his chance, maybe even a start in preseason depending on how Fitz plays this weekend.

Small chance he gets a shot at starting the 4th game. No chance he starts game 3.
