I can go to virtually every MLB draft and find players that teams passed on that became stars or were better than players than those drafted above them. You look at the system as a whole. Hell the Astros and Cubs passed on Jose Fernandez for Springer and Baez...
Its very early to say that right now. Appel had an appendectomy, and it has obviously slowed him down. They got drafted a year ago today. Patience?
The point is that it's stupid to make assessments when none of them have appeared in a single ML game. They may all end up sucking. There will be plenty of time for whining and what if's, what we would do this year doesn't matter. Beside that, Appel is the Astro, not Bryant or Grey, so there is no point in posting about them in the "Astros" minor league thread.
Not sure what I would HAVE done given all of the information and scouting I did not have access to. What I will NOT do is make any knee jerk reactions until the players have reached the major league level. What I would do today is irrelevant for a number of reasons. Perhaps I'd go with Kohl Stewart instead of either one.
Greenville starts the 19th, Tri city starts the 13th, and the Gulf coast league starts the 20th, which is where he'll probably be sent. I'd imagine we see him pitching very soon, probably by the end of the month if the contract is finished.
All I know is, Bryant is killing AA, while Appel has been burned in low A and A+. I don't have much faith in him being in a starting rotation. Maybe he can be a reliever or closer though? Its a little different when you have the first overall pick though. You could point to missed players down to round 20, but when you miss with the 1st, then that hurts more.
And the surgery, I don't think people are giving enough credence to that Appel is going to be a good mlb starting pitcher, the key will be does he develop into aid rotation guy or a front of the rotation guy

He's only 20 years old. He's also an extremely valuable trade chip. It's inevitable that somebody like him is going to get unloaded for help in the big show within the next 2 years.
But he throws 100. Just slap him in the bullpen and nickname him "Wild Thing." Actually, if I might say so myself, the nickname "Mad Dog McCullers" fits better.
there is nothing "knee jerk" about calling out Appel for what he has done thus far. getting demolished by younger, less experienced players is not good for his look.
