So in the case of Aiken in particular, we think we can change his mind? Big waste of a 1-1 if we don't.
I would think Aiken comes in below slot and given the college players drafted after, that may allow us the money to sign Nix or some other HS player over slot.
He allegedly found out he was drafted when the rest of the public did so a pre-negotiated amount is unlikely.
Not my point. I mean he couldn't have negotiated 1-1 slot money pre-draft if he didn't know he was going 1-1. Unless the Astros gave him a number that he agreed to in case he was selected.
Aiken admittedly said they had some negotiations. “We were negotiating a little bit before the draft, there was a couple people in the running,” Aiken said. “We didn’t know until it came on TV.”
I was speaking partly to his UCLA commitment. Unless he committed as a sophomore or junior, he had to know his chances were good for a MLB level payday. The Astros obviously talked to him before the draft. And obviously got a sense to what it would take. You don't draft him 1-1 otherwise. If your point is he didn't know for fact he would go 1-1, even after those conversations (I am sure he had them with other clubs as well), then OK.
Every single high school player, even those that know they are going in the first handful of picks, commits to a school. Leverage tool.
The overwhelming odds are in favor of us signing our top 11 picks. We'll probably use our 11th rounder on a signability guy.
From reading his Twitter bio, Mike Vernon looks like he's Brian McTaggart's understudy on the MLB.com Astros beat.

Cal State-Fullerton coach Vanderhook on J.D.
