Yes, the Spurs have three all stars. Tony, Manu and Tim. Just because they're no longer at peak (aside from Parker) doesn't mean they're just average guys now.

Don't get sucked into the "Spurs can plug anyone in and win" BS. They have three all star caliber players and a very good supporting cast. Their non all stars are better than average players. When you add a good coach and front office to the mix you get a dominant team.

The Heat's big three are better, certainly. And their bench is more of a weakness, sure. But I get tired of this rhetoric about the Spurs "system" and it's all about team ball, and that's why they win, blah, blah. Yes, it plays a part but a system is only as good as the players in it.

Lmao. You guys give Morey WAY too much credit for absolutely nothing. Forget leaking rumors. Morey needs to quit playing mind games through the media and actually get something done this summer. If we come back with the same roster next year (with the same coach) our offseason was a complete failure.

Parker continues to be one of the most overlooked talents in the league.

What the Spurs have built cannot be replicated in one or two summers. They did acquire those 3 superstars and they did pay them big time money for many years. It's only now in the sunset of their careers that they have all 3 former All-Stars and future hall-of-famers on bargain contracts that allows them to have more ancillary pieces around them. Miami isn't even built that way and can't build that way unless they retain Lebron, Bosh, Wade for another 3-5 years and then get all 3 guys to take the Duncan-Ginobilli-Parker style contract discounts. Duncan could have left SA several times for bigger money. He didn't do it. Same thing with Manu and Parker.

So forget about trying to be the Spurs tomorrow. Ain't happening. That's many years of paying those guys big money and many seasons of those guys working together creating elite chemistry, followed by the last 3-4 years of all those guys making significant sacrifices and taking significant discounts to stay together and continue to compete for rings.

There's never been a question that the trade market for Asik is already there. We could give Asik away today if we wanted to. The question has been where can we send Lin off to that won't send us back big long-term salary or will send us back at worst an expiring salary on a player with reasonable on-court value?

My point is that by Morey leaking that he is going to restrict Parsons he is sending the signal that there is a market for Lin.

Backup point guards in the NBA.....are the most liquid commodity ever. We could sign Hinrich for $2 million per and have one of the better backup point guards. And Canaan could very easily become one of the better backup point guards.

Yes....Melo could opt out and walk. So....here's what to look for. If he indeed opts out at the last minute and Morey indeed goes into the off season without deals done and Morey doesn't exercise Parsons' option for 14-15, then Morey is most definitely letting us know that we are going to sign Melo (or somebody else) long-term and since we are going to sign them long-term we might as well get Parson's new contract done.

That is the only way Morey goes into the off season without exercising Parsons' option.

"Ideally" Morey wants Melo on a one-year deal if he can't get Love because Morey would like to see if he can exchange Melo for Love or Aldridge next year. But that's the "ideal"............only if he cannot acquire James long-term or acquire Love now.

However, I'm sure Morey would settle for signing Melo long-term by clearing cap. And I'm also sure Morey WILL NOT go into the off season with Parsons restricted and having to pay Parsons a big money deal WITHOUT knowing he's got deals to clear cap and sign somebody long-term.

The leak that Morey is planning on making Parsons restricted is all about getting teams and agents to the table to get a trade done prior to July 1.

Exactly! It's almost like people don't remember the Spurs with Duncan and Robinson. They don't remember when Timmy was the ball dominant force and Manu was the 6th man scoring threat. That was a team built on stars. They were forced to change as the stars aged and they hit a home run with Parker. Pop is a great coach but he wouldn't be taking the T-Wolves deep in the playoffs with his magic "share the ball" system that some people tout.

Oh, Gawd, basketballholic has more than one account.....!

    Anyway, what about the 76ers?

There's some dude on a 76ers fan board, name of sixerjones, for some reason he seems to be their insider (much like our "insiders": you believe him or you don't believe him, but even if he's legit, doesn't mean it'll come true).

So he seems adamant that the 76ers are hot and heavy for the 5th pick in the draft to go along with the 3rd. But they need a late 1st and expiring contract to grease the wheels.

Going with some of the details of what he hears will go down, maybe we could do something like:

    (After July moratorium)

    to 76ers:
Player Drafted With #5 pick + Jeremy Lin + $3,000,000 (from the Rox, of course; hence I think this would happen in July....new "season", new 3 million bucks)

    to Jazz
Thaddeus Young + Players Drafted at #10 and #25

    to Rockets
Beloved Cap Space + Maybe Some Worthless Second Round Pick?

Anyway, this might all be contingent on who's available when each team drafts, but something like this idea: unburden a team of future salary commitments, boost along another team that's tired of sucking, while getting rid of Lin's salary.

Asik will be much easier. At least he has value.

Or maybe the whole thing was leaked by Fegan? I mean if there is even a chance that Parsons is going to hit RFA, why wouldn't he want to start pumping up the market value ASAP?

I think spending too much energy on who leaked what, and for what reasons is just going to make your head spin a million miles a minute. While your at it, you might as well start researching the Kennedy assassination.

Lin is a better playmaker by far than Knight. Lin is a better playmaker and player and teammate by far than Brandon Jennings. And Sacramento does not want to tie up long-term salary in Isaiah Thomas. In fact, they want to pay Thomas very little. He'll most likely walk if he gets any substantial offer or they are going to try to sign-and-trade him. Sacramento would rather have Lin on a one-year deal that coincides with Gay's expiration and Love's expiration (if they acquire him) so that they can reset their cap if Gay/Love (no pun intended) walk away from them next year.

It was reported by Woj. If Fegans was making it up, Woj wouldn't report it. Woj only reports things that are verified. That's why he's got that rep. The leak originated with Morey himself.

You can spend time on the Kennedy assassination if you want to. I prefer to figure out what is happening with my team. And it didn't take days and weeks to figure out what is happening. It's simple logic. If you think it through in simple realistic terms and you are realistic about what Parsons' trade value and you understand Sacramento is willing to trade #8, McLemore, and anybody not named Cousins for Love...then you can put together what is happening here.

I'm going to put up another piece in this thread later today about how this could turn into Love to Houston.

I think Lin to Philly is the most likely scenario. They could take him on and still be close to the salary floor. Plus he would help sell seats.

Lin + Dmo or Lin + 2nd rounder

Also, I think Morey somehow swings the #8 pick from Sacramento. Rockets and Kings have a history of trading. Kings usually get the short end of the trade.

Allow me to synergize the Lin to Sacramento possibility here for a second.

    We know:

    Sacramento wants Love.

Sacramento is willing to let Minnesota pick the trade as long as it doesn't involve Cousins.

Sacramento needs a point guard solution.

Sacramento doesn't want to pay Thomas long-term.

So here's a possibility involving Lin.

We trade Lin for Derrick Williams straight up. Sacramento would have to throw in Acy if it is before July 1. He's non-guaranteed.

Here's the beauty of that trade. IF Minny does trade Love to Sacramento they are going to want Sacramento's expiring contracts, not long term deals, and they have 2 ways of going about it. Sacramento has enough expiring salaries (Jason Terry, Outlaw) to go along with McLemore to get the deal done. Better yet for Minnesota's sake, they let Sacramento draft their guy at #8, sign him, and then trade him 30 days later using his salary, McLemore's salary and the salary of Acy, and Terry to get it done.

Fine. How do we make that better for Sacramento?

Well, Sacramento will have Lin, Gay, Cousins, Love. Would they rather have Lin at $15 million for one season or would they rather have Derrick Williams at $6.3 million plus Isaiah Thomas signed long-term for ?????? That's the trade off for Sacramento. Paying Lin a net $12 million (after we throw in $3 million) is better for them than paying Derrick Williams money to do the same thing he did in Minnesota (nothing) backing up Love again and being tied to Thomas long-term.

They can still retain the rights to Thomas in this scenario and if the money is right match the offer or negotiate a contract with Thomas that turns him into a trade asset or they can let him walk if the money is too much.

So, let's say Minnesota wants Derrick Williams back in a Love trade. Possible. Maybe? Don't know if they want him back or not. But if they did...and we've got a deal pending with Sacramento of Lin for Derrick Williams then if Minnesota is willing to trade Love before July 1 we'll gladly throw in Lin to Sacramento and Minny can have back Williams too. Sacramento has enough expiring salary to trade for Love and Lin as long as they do it simultaneously.

This means for us Lin is cleared out for nothing but cash. Perhaps we have to throw #25 to Minnesota as well to get the deal done. Doesn't really matter. Being able to move out Lin and #25 for nothing is a win-win for us if we are opening up max cap space for Lebron or Melo or Bosh.

We're not interested in the #8 pick except as a trade asset. Sacramento is dangling #8 for Love.

Perhaps......just perhaps..........but I think unlikely......Sacramento would trade #8 for Asik if the Love trade fails. That would allow them to move Cousins to the 4. And would give us probably enough assets between #8 and #25 to get Lin out of here for nothing.

So essentially you've got Asik, Lin, #25 going out for cap space, trade away DMo and Jones for future picks and we're on our way to max cap space.

But we're not interested in acquiring #8 for ourselves.

    Not correlated.

Rockets will look for trades. You see Phil Jackson trading him after trying to keep him?

If Lin goes to Philly it's most likely attached to Asik and #25 and Jones/DMo. Hinkie just might do that deal with Asik, the pick and the asset values of Jones/DMo.

We know Hinkie wants Asik. And he wants to sign Asik to a long-term deal. And #25 plus DMo/Jones plus MCW plus #10 may be enough to get Orlando to give up #4 so Hinkie can draft both Exum and Wiggins.

Philly: Exum, Wiggins, Thad Young, Asik, Noels

That is some big time length and athleticism around Asik in the middle.

Even if they can't get Exum: MCW, Wiggins, Thad Young, Asik, Noels still big time length, athelticism, and stifling defensive potential.

As with any major decision, there is probably more than one reason supporting the decision ultimately made - i.e. the balance sheet approach. Perhaps one minor reason it was leaked was to put the kibosh on other teams asking for Parsons in trade talks.
