In this case, wouldn't the correct political play be to ask Congress, have them veto it, and thereby leaving whatever responsibility and public backlash there is for the decision in Congress' lap instead of taking the political hit himself?

Actually it looks like he had a conscience and wasn't in to killing folks in an unnecessary war. The poor kid actually believed in the cause and was extremely upset to see the uselessness of it all. He is not the first, but most don't react like he did.

Unnecessary, losing wars tend to do this.

The correct response to 9/11 would have been to have a televised cry fest in Vermont. If you felt really bad you could go hold hands with the pedophiles that were paying their debt to society by talking to each other for a few hours.

I'd argue we responded correctly initially- and then lost sight of it completely. The war, very quickly, went from being about catching OBL and dealing with AQ to fighting the Taliban and stabilizing Afghanistan. While the latter definitely help with the former, and while I think the Taliban are a vile, backwards group - I think we created an unrealistic precedent on how to fight terrorism. Combating terrorism is about prevention and containment, and anti-american extremism extends far beyond the borders of Afghanistan and won't be easily solved by simply invading every country that harbors terrorists. I think that's more of the point that most liberals are (trying to make).

Of course, I could be wrong and this could just be glynch being glynch - in which case ignore me.

It actually is, had the traitor committed suicide rather than deserting, it wouldn't have cost the lives of several others. Suicide is a very serious problem among vets but that's a much better problem to have than treason.

Third Soldier Comes Forward To Say Taliban Attacks Become More Deadly After Bergdahl Deserted…

    Via Mediaite:http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bergdahl...acks-got-more-direct-after-bergdahl-deserted/

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s squad leader who commanded him on the night he disappeared, Staff Sgt. Justin Gerleve, joined CNN host Jake Tapper on Wednesday where he said the former Taliban prisoner “totally deserted.” Gerleve confirmed, as have others who served with Bergdahl, that he believed attacks on American personnel became more direct and accurate after the captured American solider was taken by the Taliban.

“I believe that he totally deserted not only his fellow soldiers but his leadership that wanted the best for him and for our country,” Gerleve told Tapper. Gerleve said that he believes this because of the actions Bergdahl took and comments he made prior to his disappearance.

When asked if he believed, as his fellow soldiers have said, that attacks on U.S. troops got worse after Bergdahl abandoned his post, Gerleve replied, “Yes.”

“As one of the soldiers have stated, the attacks did get more direct, the IEDs did get more pinpoint to our trucks rather than the side of the roads, and everything like that,” Gerleve added. “I can’t say for sure the leakage was from Bergdahl, but it’s kind of a suspicion that it did happen.”

“Everything that we taught him, I mean, it was coming to — as far as direct attacks and indirect attacks,” he continued.

Ouch: Bergdahl’s Home Town Cancels Plans For Homecoming Celebration…

HAILEY, Idaho, June 4 (Reuters) – The hometown of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has canceled a rally planned for later this month celebrating his release from five years of Taliban captivity, a municipal official told Reuters on Wednesday, amid allegations that he was a deserter.

Heather Dawson, the city administrator of Hailey, Idaho, said town officials called off the June 28 event at the request of organizers because the town “will be unable to safely manage the number of people expected.”

The decision came as the small mountain community was coming under mounting pressure to cancel the rally amid rising anger over claims by some of Bergdahl’s former Army comrades that he had deliberately abandoned his post in Afghanistan

I'm beginning to think you joined the military for the wrong reasons. Either that or you need some serious therapy.

    I hope you get it.

You just don't understand and that's fine. I don't really expect you to understand, I just wish you were less tenacious about attempting to spread your ignorance about the subject.

Being from 5 generations of a military family I understand quite well. I can see the signs.

Again, I hope you get the help you need.

    that was then.

QUESTION: Yeah, thank you. The terrorists are asking for the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and Aafia Siddiqui from the U.S. prisons. Do you have any reaction to that?

MS. NULAND: The United States does not negotiate with terrorists.

    QUESTION: That means --

QUESTION: So do you apply that to Algeria? Algeria does not negotiate with terrorists?

MS. NULAND: I’ll say it again. The United States does not negotiate with terrorists.

QUESTION: I’m asking, do you expect Algeria to live up to the same model?

MS. NULAND: We do not negotiate with terrorists.
