Morey wouldn't do this if he didn't think it was a good move. He's obviously got a plan that he thinks is the best course of action. Morey is smart, and I trust he knows what he's doing.
What about a S&T with Lin and/or Asik involved. Could you please add how much salary they could take back. I know the trade rules for taking back 125% or 150% are kinda screwy, but I'm under the impression they could get much more salary back in a S&T and its getting late & I'm too lazy right now to figure that out.
The Rockets can spin this any way they like, but the truth is, Parsons can leave the Rockets no matter what they do. Parsons can accept the qualifying offer and become a UFA next season if he wants. The only difference is that he'd have made $3mil more this year. In addition, the Rockets max cap space this offseason, even if they clear everyone except for Parsons, Beverley, Harden, and Howard, meaning no 1st round picks, no Jones, no Canaan, no Daniels, is still quite short of Melo/Lebron/Bosh type max. Whereas they would've had much more money if they just picked up Parsons option.
No, I am assuming the Rockets keep Parsons on the books for his qualifying offer of 4 million, and then sign him to whatever he wants after we use the cap space. Would need an agreement in place however that he will not sign a contract putting the Rockets on the seven day clock.
Under most scenarios, Melo would make more money via a sign and trade rather than as a straight free agent signing. That's the Larry Bird exception and it represents Phil Jackson's leverage on Melo. I'm not sure Morey can get to a level where Melo would be able to sign for the same amount of money as a free agent than as part of a sign and trade. It's not easy to dump salaries on 1 year contracts in the NBA. You can dump long-term salary, but not short term salary. The traded salaries have to be roughly equal for the current year. Lin and Asik have monetary value to teams because they have expiring contracts, not long-term contracts. You can't trade Lin's or Asik's $8 million 2014-15 contract obligation for a $4 million 2014-15 contract in return.
Not sure how you came to this conclusion. Parsons becomes eligible for S&T with this move. If we had picked up his option, he would've simply been a normal player with a 1yr/900K contract.
If you can't imagine a scenario where Parsons turn down more money, then by this logic the Rockets have no chance to lose him next year either. Given how we can offer him the most money. If Parsons like money, then he's a Rocket for as long as Les will pay him. If Parson like to be free from the Rockets, then the Rockets have no shot at retaining him regardless of what they do this year.
It depends on if the other team is a taxpaying team and what the salary is of player being traded. Different rules for 1.) 0-10m, 2.) 10-20m 3.) 20+m Do you mean for Melo?
No, no, no. Carmelo gets his money if he stays in NY. If he leaves NY, he's taking less years/money but it's the same, whether that's signing straight up with his new team or doing a sign and trade.
Exactly my point. There's no way he's not a Rocket unless we trade him. Zero chance he passes on the opportunity for long term financial stability
I mean with a Melo/Dirk/Lebron that is an UFA if they opt out. In that scenario they cannot S&T for a free agent under the CBA S&T rules. If Melo opts out, and Parsons is a RFA, the way I see it, it keeps the Knicks from being able to demand Parsons in a S&T & holding up a deal.
We can, hopefully will. This proves Morey is going for a star RIGHT NOW. not in 2015. Get that star, lebron decline bro, then match any offer for parsons.
Maybe Morey is making a deal to get Feigen his money early in exchange for something. Does Feigen represent 'Melo, Love, Rondo or any other top FA target? Agents, and particularly this guy, hold a lot of leverage. Maybe Morey wants to be in biz with Feigen.
Does this close the door on parallel deals? (i.e. Parsons S&T for J.R. Smith, Melo S&T For Asik + whatever)
