I don't think it's supposed to be scary, more creepy and gothic, as a reflection of the times and the subject matter. Mummies, occultists, vampires, re-animation, Dorian Gray.. it's all there.. almost like a dark version of League of Extraordinary gentlemen. I like it so far, and I definitely didn't expect that ending. Proteus was turning out to be a rather nice sweet fellow.
I am still feeling it out as well. I like Billy Piper [she is incredibly cute to me] But I dunno what her part in this will be Rocket River
The wife and I watched the first two eps as well. We are intrigued, and confused at the same time haha. We'll see where this goes...
I personally thought that the 2nd episode was far better than the first. That ending with Proteus though, damn that was harsh... Like most in this thread, I'm not sure exactly what's going on just yet.
Clutchfans reviews seem pretty lukewarm. Disappointing because I was pretty interested in this show after the trailers.
I am going with the ideal that it is a slow building show These first two episodes only seem to be introducing the principle characters and the tone/general idea of the story They seem to still be introducing principle characters Rocket River
Exactly. We just met Dorian Gray. Who's left? Dr. Jekyl? Jack the Ripper? HG Wells? Some ancient Pharaoh? It's definitely worth watching, especially now that some series are done until the fall, like Black List and M:AoS.. gotta get the fix in some how.
I am trying to figure out Billy Pipper's role I cannot imagine she is . . .well just what she appears to be at this moment Rocket River not that it would be a spoiler or anything
Interesting take on Frankenstein's monster. speculation: Spoiler I think Ethan (the american), is responsible for the shredded bodies that they are speculating is the return of the ripper. I suspect he is "the american werewolf in London". He woke up on the dock with marks on his hands, he ran from America due to legal problems, and he just had that encounter with the wolves.
Makes perfect sense actually. As for the Franenstein monster, I agree it's been a very clever take on the whole story.
Spoiler The only thing which would make me question this is the fact that he didn't wake up in the traditional post-werewolf state of either being naked or being in shredded clothing. He was just dressed normally. Makes me think it may be something other than a werewolf, Jekyll & Hyde perhaps? I know he's not a doctor or anything though.. but he sure does seem to be foreshadowed as a werewolf, you are probably right, but if so, he can't be the kind that messes up his clothes..
Spoiler The type Benico Del Toro type of wolfman The build up is slow I am concern it will lose some audience before they get where it gets interesting Any Idea what Piper's role will be .. . beyond the obvious? Rocket River
Spoiler Well, she's doomed to die without a doubt. And we know Frankenstein is now on the prowl for a suitable Bride for his wayward son, so maybe the interconnectedness of all things implies that she will be the one who receives the honor of being Caliban's Blushing Bride..? I dunno, just guessing. I agree that it would seem pointless to give her so much screen time so far if she is only going to curl up and die any day. Or maybe Chandler bites her in a werewolf rage and she in turn also becomes a werewolf-ess, and he ends up having to hunt her..? No idea, but it will be fun to find out
Piper's role speculation: More show speculation: Spoiler I suppose turning her into a vampire would also "cure" her from an inevitable death. And I'm sure there are more classic monsters to introduce. With the egyptian ties, a mummy seems likely at some point.
Still dragging along. I have not fully watched the last episode but . . .it was not starting well. Rocket River
