I like Sansa better as the sadsack naive girl she is in the book. I think she's a great character like that. One, I think she's very believable as the pampered daughter of a great lord with her head in the clouds who's jarred by the harsh realities of life and politics. Two, she's a great foil to the streetwise Arya. And three, she's a foil for all the calculating political actors that use her for a pawn -- all those guys are smart and bold and productive, and she's the opposite of all that. If you're going to have all these predators in the story, you need some prey as well. I can see book-Sansa becoming weathered with a heavy dose of life lessons, but I hope she doesn't ever become competent at politicking. That's too lame and obvious a character arc. I thought about that, but then they have a follow-up conversation about 'why did you save me' that makes me think they're not going that way.
If you watched the "Inside the Episode", they made it pretty clear that Littlefinger was dead in the water and needed to be saved by Sansa. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/RB3vgeMijCc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
They have messed up Littlefinger in similar ways thru out the whole series. Littlefinger telling Sansa he is going to rescue her in the middle of the throne room in season 2, Littlefinger threatening to expose Cersei's secrets to her face in season 2, Littlefinger sharing his "origin story and deepest desires with whores who are auditioning for him, Littlefinger being a full time pimp rather than a business man who happened to own brothels among his many investments. Now Littlefinger killing Lysa with no plan of how he is going to get out of the situation and getting lucky that Sansa decides to save him by making up a story on the spot. Now it's more like Lysa's death was a spur of the moment whim than a calculated part of his plan. It's a shame because he should be a much more interesting character than they have made him.
It's not that he had no plan. His story was the same as Sansa's....suicide. It's just that he hadn't found time to coach Sansa on the details of the story, which IS a screw up because we know from the books it takes multiple days just to get to the top of the Eyrie, so he had plenty of time to work up whatever story they wanted. Seems a case of the show trying to accelerate some of Sansa's story without necessarily thinking through the details. It didn't really bother me because I was much more excited that it seemed Sansa is about to get much more interesting.
He had no plan, because he had no idea what Sansa's story was going to be. If she really had told the truth, then she would have told them Littlefinger pushed Lysa. Even if coming to the top of the Eyrie wasn't a long process, you would think that "getting their story straight" would be something he covered seconds after Lysa's death, not something that he would forget until after the lords had arrived. If that was his "plan" he should have just told the lords that there were no other witnesses.
Agreed. He is not as cunning as he has been in the past. After what seems like decades [at least years] of planning he has become kind of haphazard of late Rocket River
Man that Viper fight really was awesome, but it still sucks seeing him die. I actually think this was one character I actually liked more because of the show. What a great casting decision. I tell you, a mini-series prequel focusing on Oberyn would be at the top of my watch list. My one wtf moment that strayed from the books was when Arya showed up to the Eyrie. I don't like how the show keeps teasing Starks reuniting. Frustrating. As for Sansa, I'm curious to see where they go with her story now that they've pushed so far into it. I also agree that the show's Littlefinger is not the mastermind that the book's is.
They should have cast Pedro Pascal as Daario. He plays Oberyn the way Daario should have been played. And, he'd live longer too. Of course, then you have to find someone else to do Oberyn, but it's just a few episodes.
yeah but Daario's been in what, 3 or 4 scenes this entire season? Besides, I think his charisma would be wasted on the portrayal of Danerys
Speaking of Daario, do you think he survives the Battle of Mereen? Being out there in the enemy's camp with no weapons when the battle is about to begin?
I would have loved for that to happen. Oberyn just had that pimp daddy swag to him. The new Daario is boring as hell to me me, I liked the first one better.
So Gendry's been rowing for like 8 episodes now....possibly 9 after this week? Where did Davos send him off to again? Spoiler Doesn't he eventually meet up with Brienne? I can't remember his story exactly from the books.
Yeah, we don't know what's happened to him on the show. Davos sent him back to King's Landing but we haven't seen him since. In the books, he never meets or goes off with Melisandre to meet Stannis. He just stays with the Brotherhood Without Banners and then Brienne eventually runs across him at the Inn at the Crossroads.
Brienne's story is obviously going to change significantly since they had Arya and the Hound kill Rorge and Biter, when Brienne was supposed to kill Rorge and Biter was supposed to take off half her face. Also the show has no Shagwell the fool or any other named former Brave Companions for her to fight, and so who knows what will happen with her. It was presumed her wanderings would be significantly reduced, but the most exciting parts of those wanderings prior to meeting Lady Stoneheart don't seem possible. It's also slightly amusing that they have turned Arya and the Hound into basicly just as slow a wandering story as Brienne and Pod were in the books by extending it as long as they have.
Yep. But it's been awhile so maybe Cercei isn't so concerned about Robert's bastards anymore. Who knows? Maybe Gendry never shows up again (though Hot Pie did). And if he does, they can still have him appear anywhere they want.
