8 years $35 million is robbery for the Astros if he is as good as the team thinks he is going to be. If I was a competing agent, I am killing the agent who cut this deal for the player. Great deal by the Astros brass, but stunned that the player accepted it.

Well if he sucks he is guaranteed 35 mil. He has a chance to suck more than springs hence why springer didn't agree to that deal. Even if he sucks 4 mil a year isn't very much. Even scrub players get that.

Buys out three arb years and a year of FA. Plus side is he hits the market again at 30, he will get a big deal if he performs.

Unless he thinks he can't get over his weed addiction, it is not a smart deal. The guy appears likely to at least be a major league regular. He just left a boat load of $$$ on the table. Believe me I know anyone can live off $10 million guaranteed, but still a puzzling business decision on his part IMO.

Idk, Singleton's not without risk. I'm sure Brett Wallace, who was a comparable prospect without the personal issues, wishes he would have signed a similar deal. Without the deal singleton would have made league min for the next four years even if he succeeded. First club option covers a club controlled years so really only two years of free agency are bought out.

Think of it like this, just two years ago Paul Goldschmidt signed a 32 million dollar extension after a great rookie year. I think this is reasonable to both sides.

Like I said in the thread bashing Luhnow's methods...

why are offering these deals seen in a negative light? he's putting the onus on the players to decide whether they want to lock up some life-changing money, or gamble on themselves for a bigger payday.

i wonder if singleton's just simply not greedy, or if he's just planning on taking the 30 mill and getting lazy and druggy with the rest of his life.

He's only guaranteed $10M, which makes it a great move by the club.

Hail Luhnow. Dominguez and Springer didn't bite but at least Jon did. This is huge for future flexibility.

Hmm, just don't get why his agent let him sign an extension so early. Guess he needs some extra spending cash.
