We need tough head coach. Don't think an assistant coach is able to bring your core players to play defense while the head coach can't. I just don't understand why the play-motivating role of McHale is so important that Morey has to give him a head coach position.
Well yeah, but nobody has shown interest in hiring him as head coach so far. We have Steve Kerr getting offers before Lionel Hollins, he's not getting a head coaching gig.
Yeah of course he does but it may make sense to be an assistant for a year or 2 and then get even better options. Minny is a terrible job but the Lakers are an attractive option. And honestly if Mchale sucks again he could just be promoted to HC here regardless of his feeling towards analytics and encounters with Hollinger in Memphis. BTW Hollinger doesnt have the highest reputation in the NBA after his suggested moves in San Antonio and now with the way he has handled himself in Memphis.
I just don't see Hollins taking the job unless he had assurances that McHale was either out or on his way out. A coach of his stature gains nothing from taking a step back and being an assistant coach with head coaching jobs available to him. And that's assuming that he thinks that he can work well with Morey. Long shot.
The max salary of assistant coach was about $1m/year in NBA history Can the Houston give a $1.5m/year contract to an assistant coach?
What stature? He had a couple of good seasons with Memphis but it's not like teams are fighting each other to hire the guy.
Why not go after both? Fire Finch and Bickerstaff, the assistant coaches should be chosen among: Lionel Hollins Scott Skiles Sam Cassell Mario Elie Ron Artest Stephen Jackson Rasheed Wallace Shane Battier
If Alvin Gentry can become an assistant coach, I don't see why Hollins would object to being an associate head coach. I would welcome him with open arms.
Yes. Doc Rivers was a ****ty coach about to be fired when McHale helped him out by trading Garnett to Boston. Doc also stupidly traded Bledsoe for Jared Dudley.
