Love seeing the longtime lurking dorks coming out of the wood work to protect their fellow dorks. Good readin' and thanks for bitin'! (L.O.L.)
How are they the cool kids if all the guys throwing snarky comments behind a computer have 10,000+ posts on a message board?? That is a little quote unquote nerdy to me, but nerds have been ruling the world for the past 3 decades.... It's a boring competition i couldnt watch but an admirable hobby to dedicate yourself to as a child. Must be something to it if ESPN televises it over snooker and billiards.
If your making fun of these kids for being "nerdy", then you have absolutely NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN about the rich, privileged, educated, not being able to afford college, the education in this country, etc. YOUR ATTITUDE is everything thats wrong with the education system in this country.
I turned it on with about 7 spellers left. Most of those kids seemed just fine to me. The only one who was noticeably "off" was the guy in the Vine.
Funny you mention this. My four year old loves working with numbers and is very proficient at addition/subtraction/multiplication. She is good at solving puzzles as well. It is evident that her IQ is pretty high. At times she scares us because she talks like an adult. If we let her sit all day and do math and read books, she will be perfectly content with that. But we do not want that. Sometimes we have to "force" her to do things with other kids and just go out and play. We want her to hang out with other kids, socialize and just have fun. We want balance. These spelling bee kids are smart but they are also very socially challenged. I have seen parents that force these kids to sit at home and memorize the dictionary. That is simply not healthy.
Perhaps your daughter is autistic - dont be afraid to take her for a psych evaluation. It will help her connect with peers later in life if the problem has been worked on. These kids are pretty self driven .. You can't force someone to get into stuff like this. Dont get the kinds of topics that make people bitter and jaded in an attempt to attack those of certain skin colors.
Doc says she is fine. She socializes really well with her friends at pre-school and her teacher are happy with her. But if left alone she is perfectly content with doing things on her own. This is where we come in to make sure she has a balanced life style. Yes, you can force kids to do it. I have personally seen/known two families do this. And yes, they were both Indian.

Do you know these kids? Do you know that they are "socially challenged?" They were joking around with the judges, one said that he was a LeBron fan and appeared to know what's going on in the playoffs. Most 12 and 13 year olds are awkward anyways...these dudes just happen to be Indian and wear glasses.
You wonder why we don't have enough home-grown PHDs (click the link ) http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=8848201&postcount=39
That's because spending hours and hours learning the spelling of words is a complete waste of time. It's an extremely dry task that has practically 0 applicability, forcing these kids to isolate themselves from the real world where such a skill doesn't mean ****. Memorizing a dictionary all day will probably still cause social impairment but at least it is beneficial.
I've met a couple of contestants. They are pretty socially challenged. Could be because the majority are homeschooled, but that's also because no sane skool ( yes I did that to show how useless spelling is...) will focus so much time on something so useless.
This article is a "where are they now" for some past spelling bee winners: http://www.businessinsider.com/lives-of-national-spelling-bee-champs-2013-5#
