Don't use a muddled down word like racist to describe him. He is a bigot. Calling people racist these days has very little meaning. Do you think beating your daughter for associating with a black person is the same as telling a racist joke?

Sadly this is true. I find minorities being racist more than any other.

Aaron Aaranza: I'm not a racist. I love my black friends and their beautiful kids. They just can't dance with my daughter at her quinceanera...it might make some of the family members feel uncomfortable and cause turmoil in the family. I don't want to be responsible for that.

I'm not sure it's simply due to him being black.....the guy seems to be into hip hop himself, as well as the Rockets and Texans...not that doesn't make you racist, but i think it may have more to do with her picking someone that's not mexican for what is a strong mexican tradition.

Obviously he's still a piece of $hit for what he did to her, but as far as racism goes, it's just weird sometimes when you're dealing with customs and traditions. It's like going to another country and trying to be part of their celebration by taking a high profile spot in it. It's not going to work out well the majority of the time.

How else do you explain it? I just think we're too quick to label people racists because it's an easy conclusion to make sometimes. IMO, there's racists, who truly believe other races are inferior from a humanity standpoint, and then there's stupid people who say stupid things without thinking, which sometimes includes racist remarks. I think he's the latter.

I think you've actually been more quick to use customs and traditions as a shield. It's not "weird" just because it's customs and traditions. A tradition or a custom can be racist or bigoted. Customs and traditions have always and will always change. It doesn't excuse anyone from being falling into the category of racist. It doesn't make it less racist.

This guy referred to the kid with a racial slur. What could be the case is that he's racist against more than one race. More accurately, he could be ethnocentric. That just means you're racist towards everyone, and it doesn't make you any less racist towards each of those races.

This kind of racism really cripples communities. Believe me, I know. I live in one of the most racially diverse places on the planet and the racism is horrible here.

I don't think you meant to excuse his racism, but at the same time I don't think the possibility you described does anything at all to render this guy less racist. Further, it might be insulting to people of his race who have to make decisions about the same customs and traditions. Racism evolves unfortunately. In our time, this type of racism replaces the old type of racism. This is what the guy is willing to say in front of party guests. That's horrifying.
