Out back behind Almeda Mall... It was built to look like it probably does now anyway... Edit: this thread has obviously triggered a nostalgic posting frenzy (for me) since I haven't lived in Houston since 1980.
Yes it's still there. That and Frank's Grill are both good spots. Hit em on early flights from Hobby.
ever go into the Happy-Go-Lucky on Telephone and Broad? still standing. now THAT should a historic Houston establishment some day.
You guys remember the Tank section across the street that they built later on that died pretty quickly. It was like you could sit in the tanks and shoot other tanks with these rubber balls etc.
The Confederate House.... sounds stupid, but when they changed their name, folks stopped showing up. I remember being a kid and being horrified by the name.
Felix on Westheimer was around for over 60yrs!... 2.) Woolworths in downtown 3.) Majestic Metro Theater (is a banquet hall now) 4.) Garden Oaks theater on Shepherd (it's a church now) 5.) Irvington Drive Inn (it's a big machine shop now?) ....... ....... .......
Oh yeah and how about Garden in the Heights? Another outdoor venue that I had some great times, tripping balls at during the Rave summer of Love i.e. '96. And saw Echo and the Bunnymen there in '90 without Ian on vocals! And I don't recall the name but on the corner of Montrose and Westheimer there was an old BBq place that was seriously good! It was where Ruggles/Smoothie King is currently. Anyone mention the Tower Theater yet? Saw some great shows there before it became a retail spot.
Looks like you hit a nerve with this one SwoLy! I also saw several movies there as well, but the most memorable one was... Shhh.....keep this on the D-Low! Spoiler Porky's... What can I say? I was young!... ....... ....... .......
I remember that building as a kid, though I don't remember what the company actually was. Man this thread is nuts lol. Flashback paradise in here.
Great find. I remember my parents taking me there many times. I was gonna put US Golf and Games that was (is) behind Almeda Mall but I just Googled it and it's still there. No idea how it's stayed open that long, and the inside still looks the exact same! Hell, I can still remember the wood smell and the smell of the batting cages. I remember my parents dropping us all off there for hours. We'd always get kicked out for going behind the putt putt golf western houses and I tasted my first 40 ounce in their parking lot.
