As far as a basketball standpoint, I agree that no team would trade for Jeremy Lin, but his real value lies in the endoresements and sponsorships it would bring to his new team along with his fan base. Jeremy Lin could potentially be worth more than his contract off the court.
That's severely overblown (look up NBA revenue sharing), but I wouldn't discount the GM of that buying team making a case to his owner as a reason why they should do the deal even though the reason why the GM wants to do the deal will significantly differ from that of the owner, or even the director of Marketing. The GM wants the asset that he's getting from Morey in the deal, and the owner/director of marketing/etc. are probably wanting the extra 100 to 200 seats they sell a night during a slow season potentially, a few local appearances Lin can make in the community, and a banner or two around the city with his face on it. When the Rockets brought in Lin, that was coming off the height of Linsanity, and the marketing and national appeal brought on by that signing was dwarfed by the Harden trade quickly. That tells you all you need to know right now. What is going to sell seats, draw internet traffic, and get their team on national TV will be being good & having good players.... not having Jeremy Lin 2 years removed from Linsanity on the last year of his deal coming off the bench.
Without giving it much thought. Harper when he started playing for the bulls. LJ when we was traded to the knicks.
If they did the trade soon enough they could decline the option and go the RFA route. Without that, they are making a similar "he will really want to get paid" bet. It's probably as safe a bet for Parsons as for anyone... since he should much prefer the extra year and meaningfully extra guaranteed money... But then, another "LA" loving kid, going to make millions from someone, may just hate Minnesota.. so it's a very fair point But assuming Minnesota wants him, I can't believe DM holds back from making the move... works for me
Whether or not Minnesota wants Parsons is not necessarily the question. To the extent that Parsons has value to any other team, you can, and may need to, trade Parsons to that team for an asset to send to Minnesota. Phoenix, for example, can use Parsons and has the 13th pick plus multiple other 1st rounders. Maybe Sacramento thinks Parsons can be the glue guy to a disorganized team. And Parsons may want to use the opportunity to seduce the billionaire owner's attractive daughter.
Neglect is not the right word. Bosh hasn't neglected his offense. He's simply moved from the first offensive option in Toronto to the third offensive option in Miami while increasing his defensive intensity to championship level.
You could make the argument that Battier did that. I think he came out of a college as a more well-rounded player. Other than him though? I don't think that's been the case.

The "Parsons will be better on D if he devoted less energy to O" theory seems hokey to me. Homey doesn't exactly carry so much offensive burden that he cannot play defense. There are plenty of guys who do both. Chris Bosh scores 16 ppg and plays very good defense. Paul Pierce does the same. Chris Paul drives the Clippers offense and plays good defense. If Parsons or anyone else lacks the stamina to do both effectively, then that's something to consider as to how valuable he is.
Isn't Parsons one of those guys that runs the furthest each game? How is that not affecting his ability to play lock down defense?
There are oh so many reasons why Lin cannot be amnestied, signed after new CBA, Scola was amnestied, it doesn't make sense to... the list goes on.
Or these teams can, you know, use those assets to instead just trade for Love? You have seen how the Kings are willing to get Love without any assurances of re-signing, right? A lot of things sound good in theory more than they do in practice. Parsons is very sub-optimal as a trade chip based on what the Rockets need for a Kevin Love trade, which is a high draft pick.
They can indeed do this. The question is whether Love would threaten to leave each of these teams and how worried each team is about this threat. If the bidding gets high, though, and teams are willing to trade for Love without assurance of him staying, I can see scenarios where HOU's offers, outside of one involving Harden, are just insufficient to Minnesota.
If Love threatens every team but the Rockets to the point where they don't believe he has any chance to re-sign, then his value would be so low the Rockets won't even have to trade Parsons to get him. Warriors won't give up Klay, none of the top-10 picks would be involved. Jones+1st rounders+Asik(or whatever we get for Asik), would be the best Minnesota can expect. It's an either-or situation. Either Love is not set on his ultimate destination, creating a bidding war that the Rockets certainly cannot hope to win. Or he is set on his destination, in which if that team were the Rockets, Morey would have such leverage over Saunders that Parsons would not even enter the discussion. There is no middle ground.
Problem is even if set we have seen before teams are still willing to gamble their future on the fact they can change his mind.
There is a middle ground. Love may have a limited list of acceptable destinations-- maybe 2 or 3 or 5, whatever. So, there would be competition but whether HOU can win it with some Parsons/Asik/Jones/pick package depends on who else is on that list and what they offer and what MIN's preference is. And even if there is a hot bidding war, HOU may still win it by deploying the ultimate weapon in its arsenal: trading Harden for Love.

If you use past examples of players who have threatened to leave in FA if not traded, Melo had a list of one team and drew Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Mozgov, multiple picks. Dwight had 3 teams and could've been traded for the Harden package or what they ended up getting. DWill got 2 top-5 lottery picks. All of those packages are better than Parsons(one year away from UFA), Jones, and what should be a bevy of very, very low 1st rounders with no chance of being anywhere decent. And every team in this year's Love sweepstakes have shown to be willing to give up a lottery pick. Or in the case of Chicago, a Euro many believe to be worth a lottery pick.
You people keep saying that, especially with the all caps, and you are gonna jinx it and make Morey trade Harden.
