My youngest daughter and I can't wait or this to make its way to video. The teaming of Paranormal Activity and Insidious... it just has to be creepy!
John Carter Not good. Recently read Princess of Mars and am halfway through Gods of Mars (great series so far), so I decided to give the movie a shot. Not good. Changed some things unnecessarily, and should have made it a "hard" PG 13 instead of PG. Plus, I'm not a fan of Taylor Kitsch. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. 5/10.
Gentlemen Broncos 7/10 This movie came out in 2010, and I have always meant to try to watch it whenever I got the chance. Well I finally did the other night and all I can say is... Uhhhhmmmm...? And that's not a bad thing, don't get me wrong. This movie seems to exist in the same world as the one we saw in Napoleon Dynamite. So right there, if you like that movie, you would probably like this one, and if you didn't enjoy Napoleon, then I doubt you would make it 30 minutes into Broncos. The main reason I wanted to see Gentlemen Broncos was because of Jemaine Clement. Pretty much everything I have seen him in, he has been golden, and Broncos is no exception. If you don't know the plot, basically Michael Angarano (from Forbidden Kingdom and Sky High, and whatever else, I don't remember) is a sort of repressed fatherless home-schooled kid in (I think) Utah named Benjamin, who apparently writes God-awful science fiction, and who sort of idolizes this (also God-awful but still apparently successful) sci-fi author named Ronald Chevalier. Chevalier is clearly a pompous idiot. Benjamin attends some sort of mini-camp for science fiction writers, and Chevalier is the main attraction. A contest is announced, and Chevalier is one of the judges who has to read the submitted stories, of which Benjamin's story, 'Yeast Lords' is one. While reading the stories, Chevalier receives a call from his publisher telling him his latest manuscript has been rejected, and he is about to be dropped. He throws a tantrum, scattering the students' submitted stories all over the floor. Then he notices 'Yeast Lords', reads it, and likes it enough to steal it, desperately changing the characters around a bit, but leaving the story primarily intact. The publisher loves the story, and Chevalier's wildly successful (but stolen) becomes a big hit, unknown to Benjamin. And things just get zany from there. One of the strangest and funniest things about this movie is that Sam Rockwell plays the main character in 'Yeast Lords' - or, as Chevalier renames him, 'Brutus' - as a sort of direct line into the imaginations of both authors. Benjamin imagines him as a sort of stand-in for his long-departed father, sort of a ridiculously hairy mountain man, and Chevalier re-imagines him as a sort of blonde Freddie Mercury-ish drag queen, or something. Rockwell is having a ball with all of this insane stuff, and there were times when watching this movie that I thought to myself, 'I can't believe this actually is on film!' .. and to me, that's a good thing, I like twisted bizarre things like this on occasion. So anyway.. bottom line, I liked it. I don't know if I will RE watch it, but it was worth a single viewing for sure, and I appreciated what the filmmakers were trying to do with it. If you like the bizarre quirky world of Napoleon Dynamite, then you will like this one a lot. If not, then skip it.
Short Term 12 - 5/10 I'm not sure what people saw in this movie (it's over an 8 on IMDB and a 99% on RT which is CRAZY high), it tried way too hard and for the most part, seemed really inauthentic.
Machine - 8/10. Maybe a little higher if i wasn't so tired. But it's a good movie about AI and what it is to be alive...very bladerunner-esque
The Last Stand - 5.5/10 Overall, it was entertaining, I did enjoy it... and didn't regret the time spent watching the movie... however, some of the acting, and the amount AND quality of CGI utilized was cringe-worthy... I can give them some leeway - assuming it was due to budget restraints - with the bridge, but gunshots... really...? That's youtube nonsense, completely inappropriate for a full featured theatrical release .. Honestly, if it weren't for Arnold, his name and the loveable/entertaining "cheese" factor he brings to every action movie... This probably would've been a straight to DVD release...
Martha Marcy May Marlene Two hours of my life wasted. Good acting by Olsen, but I wasn't a fan of the film overall. 4/10
Blue is the Warmest Color 7/10 - 3 hour movie but it kept my attention and i don't usually watch foreign films. It does earn that NC-17 rating!
The Blair Witch Project 8/10 I watched it for the first time a couple days ago, and I thought it was great, it's one of the first truly scary movies I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure why so many people didn't like it, it's probably one of my top 5 favorite horror movies ever.
Frozen I realize I'm not the target audience, but with all of the hype I was expecting better. 5.5/10
The Croods - 7.8/10 I had the opposite reaction to this Chris Sander's animated film than I had with "How to Train Your Dragon." This one didn't have the hype, but was absolutely charming, moving and surprisingly hilarious. I hadn't laugh so much, or as hard, viewing an animated film in quite a long time. And unlike Dragon, IMO, actually had interesting and fun characters, with a terrific message that is often visited but rarely understood. It's a 7.8, and not an 8 or better, because I feel they could've done more with the "end of the world" scenario, especially with these characters. Same could be said for the world around them. It was an interesting inconsistent mesh of characters and environment, but that led to confusion as to how the viewer is suppose to interpret their world. Is it a fantastical realm somewhere on earth? Is it another world similar to earth? The conclusion could've been so much better, but such as it was, it was still okay. Highly recommended family film.
The German Doctor- 7.6013/ 10. Dark and twisted, though i don't see anything wrong with growth hormones if it can make you 7'6 and never suffer foot related injuries. Alex brendemuhl was tremendous. Dude should get more roles.
Perks of Being a Wallflower Amazingly heartfelt, coming-of-age film. Can't help but become invested in evey single one of the characters, and was a film that spoke to me on several different levels. Hard to remember the last time I felt that way watching a movie. 9/10
Yes great movie. One of the few recent teenage movies that is on the level of some of the great 80's ones.
Monuments Men 4/10 Poor pacing, seemed really slow and pretty depressing. I guess Bill Murray will do that haha. It was a good story though.
