Would you extend McHale and give him more power and money for Love?

?

Would you extend McHale's contract and give him additional powers if this helps you land Kevin Love?

Why choose between McHale and Love? Obviously you:

    1. Promote/extend McHale, trade for Love.
    2. Sign Love to long-term deal, fire McHale.
    3. ??????
    4. Profit

This may seem absurd and who the hell knows if extending McHale would do anything for Love's desire to join the Rockets... but if the T-Wolves were willing to accept whatever the Rockets are offering, why wouldn't you throw a few millions at McHale to get Love? There's no salary cap for coaches. You could still fire McHale at any time. $3M in cash doesn't even get you early second rounders any more. You are telling me that the Rockets wouldn't throw a few million at McHale, if that would be the deciding factor to get Love?

I absolutely would. That easy to get Love? Do it ASAP. If/once it stops working - boom, fire him. Easy as that.

On this assumption that McHale would figure in Love's decision-making, would it still have any allure of McHale is kicked upstairs? As a coach, Love "gets" to work with him everyday. As a VP, Love might sometimes pass him in the hall.

In any case, Love still has a year on his contract. A number of teams will be willing to trade for him thinking they can convince him to stay. That's the derby you have to win -- offering better assets to the Twolves than other teams. Whoever trades for him will have the inside track on keeping him unless they have a disaster of a year like the Lakers did with Howard. Maybe if we win that derby and Love enjoys working under McHale during his lameduck year, we'll have to sign McHale to another contract to get Love to re-sign with us (unless he extends immediately, which is also possible).

To really convince Love to join you need to pay McHale at least a 5 year $35M deal that Stan Van Gundy got. Only a few million dollars is chump change and Love sees right through the plot.

And you can't fire McHale because a Love and Howard are his guys. Bait and switch on them and Howard leaves via free agency and everyone in the NBA knows you are dishonorable.

Howard won't be a free agent until 2016 and he'd realize if McHale wasn't going to get it done. Same for Love. These guys aren't dumb. They've played for both good and bad coaches.
If McHale stinks it up and get replaced by a good coach I wouldn't worry one bit about Love or Howard leaving a few years afterwards.

McHale hasn't won enough to command 5 years $35 and I doubt it would take as much to convince Love McHale was going to be here.
McHale is currently making somewhere in the $3-4M neighborhood I believe, so adding 2-3 years at $4-5M to his current deal should do the job.

An extra $8-15M to clinch a deal for Love doesn't seem unreasonable, either. I doubt it'd be a deal breaker for Morey/Les to take on a $8-15M expiring contract who has no impact on the salary cap.

    Haha.

I actually had written something along the lines of "I hate myself of putting this much thought into this ridiculous hypothetical" at the end of my post, but chose to leave it out. :)

Jason Kidd basically asked for-- and is going to receive, via Milwaukee-- what I propose for McHale. And Kidd didn't even recruit Dwight.

Coach McHale deserves a raise and a new title.

I would do anything to land Love man I don't cRe if we extend McHale for 5 years, if he keeps coaching badly and the players turn on him Les can eat the money and fire him/promote him to the front office only. If Love wants an organizational commitment to McHale, I say we do it and then go out and sign Hollins or JVG as associate head coaches.

I 100% agree that the Celtics should make Kevin McHale the president and demote Ainge for his inability to make Love to Boston come true. All I ask is the Rockets get Marcus Smart as compensation and I am all good.

Based on reputation, I'd assume that any superstar out there would be willing to trust Morey's reputation for being aggressive to upgrade the talent around them more than they would McHale's reputation to ..... be McHale (both good and bad). Keep in mind McHale's reputation as a GM vs. Morey's.

Morey is in charge from a front office perspective, and anyone with a right mind wouldn't think twice about that, and not question whether someone else should be given say over him except for Les Alexander.

If Love is coming to Houston, he's coming for 3 reasons.... James Harden, Dwight Howard, and championship aspirations.

Not because of McHale or Morey. McHale's relationship with Love only helps convey the message through a more impactful voice.

McHale already is being paid fairly well, for one of the premier coaching jobs in the NBA with some of the best talent. He has no reason to risk the gold mine job he has in order to "Pull a Jason Kidd". There is no reason to increase his power & money... He can help recruit Kevin Love/Melo/Lebron if he wants to (and I'm sure he does), but if he doesn't want to than he can just suck it & resign. Just about any available coach around the game today would be dying for the chance to coach Dwight, Harden & Love with a team like the Rockets. Some might even take the job for free.

You can always fire a coach. You can't easily get or get rid of a player. So yes.

Of course, it's Les's money, not mine.
