Why would he leave his cushy anouncing gig to be an assistant?

Of course this is a yes, will it happen? Nope. JVG is not going to come back as an assistant in my opinion. Also the dude has gotten much younger looking since he left coaching and doesn't have the added stress.

Yes, but he would NEVER take it, if he wanted to he could get a great HC gig in the NBA.

Maybe hire him as a consultant?

Totally agree with you! I don't think JVG would accept that position, BUT I think Morey should pursue him anyway! I think it's pretty clear from this thread that the majority believe he is a MUCH better coach than Mchale, and obviously there are a lot of people who like him (including myself) so this would be a GREAT PR move! Like someone already mentioned, if Morey told him (under the table) that he would be the coach next season he might bite. You never know unless you try!

As if a coach the caliber of JVG would EVER take a job to be McHale's assistant...

JVG will stay in his TV gig until he finds a head coaching job that he wants.

I don't think Van Gundy would accept an assistant's position either, but I think Morey should ask, making a serious push to get him. JVG obviously really likes this team. Being the top assisant, and at a league leading salary for the position (Les has said that he'll spend whatever it takes, right?), he'd be set up to take over the top job if McHale tires of it, or Les and Morey tire of him. Van Gundy, of course, could leave to take a head coaching gig somewhere else if it comes up. He's been out of the game for quite a while now. I bet he's getting eager to give coaching another go. Doesn't hurt that he still lives in Houston.

I think it's pretty obvious that he wouldn't mind having the Rockets coaching job. He is always saying good things about Houston/Rockets, and if history is any indication, Mchale will only be around next year (team changes coaches every 4yrs)! So in my opinion, if Morey really wants him it's a 50/50 chance that he would accept (if the Head Coaching job is his midway next year).

But I'm not sure Morey REALLY wants JVG...:(

JVG has mentioned before that he wouldn't mind taking an assistant job.

If JVG came to the Rockets, he would come as the head coach of the Rockets. being an assistant coach next to Mchale, to be honest, you gotta be kidding.

I know no one will believe me, but I have a buddy whose kid goes to school with JVG's kid and they are friends. JVG came to his 40th birthday party and has even taken his kid to school a few times.

He tells me that JVG is pretty much done coaching and really likes his current gig. He has no desire whatsoever to return to coaching of any kind until his youngest daughter is out of high school. She's in elementary school right now.

I don't think Morey would go back to that well after their last parting, even if it was an option. To do so cedes a lot of power back to the coach that Morey wants for himself. Morey has an advanced stat that shows JVG should change his coaching? JVG reminds him his fancy doo-dads didn't help him with Adelman and McHale and he had to come groveling back for good coaching. So stay out of the way. Les might be okay with that, but Morey doesn't want to have that conversation.
