If Clowney is a bust, it will be on both of them, but Rick has already run out of excuses, so he's going to be fired first.

Yep. McClain is a relic of days gone by. He used to be able to spin yarns with pure fluff and no real anaylsis/statistics/research because he was the exclusive provider of Oiler info to the public. Now he's basically useless. He has no inside connections to the Texans, zero knowledge of NFL business dealings, and very little strategic football insight. He's a storyteller in the information age. He needs to retire. On the flipside, he's decent on radio because that is more of an entertainment venue and less informative.

It's not a fair comparison when teams can't spend like them.
Yes they were buying player's with high "On base percentages", but these players (allstar level talent)were also worth a ton on money(Only big market teams could afford them in the bidding wars). The A's were a team with a low pay roll, but already had a solid young lineup with easily the best pitching staff in baseball. At the end of the day , they couldn't score enough to advance. I've watched baseball to tell you that the strategy you are referring too was over exemplified because of a movie. And a strategy none the less that you had no clue that was going on until it hit the box office. The movie portrayed the A's as a team full of scrubs when in reality, they were expected to make the playoffs with their younger talent/pitching rotation.

I feel like we are getting off topic though, and I do agree that media is much more difficult because of statistics.

First you claim that he is usually "spot on", and now "every reporter flip flops". Well which is it? Love the comparison to "journalists" Skip and Steven A. Smith. Lulz.

You are just misunderstanding my argument, but that's OK. We aren't disagreeing even though you think we are. I've watched baseball as well. I knew about the statistical movement long before the stupid movie.

justtxyank hit it on the head...that summer where he was saying it's impossible to sign free agents, totally forgot about that. He was so adamant about it that I remember wanting to drive off the freeway as I was listening to him. He made it seem that there is zero chance of anything happening bc of the cap situation. Meanwhile, other teams are against the cap, but signing free agents. It's as if he never thought it would be possible to restructure deals to gain flexibility. That's how the freakin NFL works...so frustrating.

And up until a couple weeks before the draft, I'd have to hear him on the radio saying how there is a 100% chance the Texans take a QB with their first pick...bc it's an area of need and they get their pick of the litter.

I dont have a problem with him having a wrong opinion, but I have issues with the way he presents his opinions. It's as if there is zero chance that he is wrong...and if anyone disagrees, then they are wrong.

The only people that praise him in columns are the ones that are such casual fans, that they dont follow through with attaining more information to realize that he is such a fraud.

Im shocked that we're even having to have this conversation.

Agree 100% about his relic status. He was never really a great sportswriter at least not in the mold of a Dale Robertson or Blackie Sherrod. I do remember those sessions on the radio where he would wax poetic (so to speak) about the "inside secrets" of the Houston Oilers but it was as you pointed out due to his being the official mouthpiece of the Houston Oilers. But I haven't paid much attention to what he's said for years now simply because most of what he says/writes is now totally irrelevant not to mention inaccurate.

Nobody is saying that John has to be right 100% of the time...We just want him to not be wrong 95% of the time.
