it's been a couple hours now. hope we're safe. now we just have to find a way to scare fitz out of the city.
Why? If the Texans brought him in, it'd be to start. Drafting a QB at the end of the 4th who'll sit for a year (or two . . . or forever) doesn't mean we don't still need a starter this year . . . . or next year . . . . or the year after that (other than Fitz). I don't know if the Mallett rumors are/were true, but if we were interested, drafting a developmental QB in the 4th shouldn't change anything. It won't stop us from trading for a QB if that's what we want to do and/or it won't stop us from taking another QB with a high pick next year.
If we really like him I'd try to maybe move Merciless who might not fit here for Mallett and a pick. It might be time to give up on Merciless now, when he still has value, unless we're excited about keeping a fresh rotation and think Reed will absolutely excel at ILB. But even if Merciless can contribute I don't see him as a reasonable long term solution willing to accept a contract that fits his value to this team. The time to sell high is now.
Eh, I wouldn't be so sure. If he is a good pupil and shows some real promise and our Oline looks good too, I think we will see him sooner than later, depending on how the other two perform of course.
Because... The Texans won't bring 5 QBs into camp (they may sign some UDFA or washout journeyman for the purpose of practice reps though). If they did trade for Mallet, it would cost them a draft pick (probably in the 4-6 range). They just spent 3+ million on Fitz and a 4th on Savage. Even if they immediately cut TJ and Keenum, it's not even a sure thing that they have 3 QBs on the roster come opening day. You think they would cut a QB they just spent either a 4-5th rounder on or 3 million to bring in? Unlikely.
I hope not. Seriously, for his sake. He really hasn't played that much football due to the transfers. He's showed great tools but he's raw. He needs to be brought along slowly and I think any potential success depends on it. I think that if you try to make him a starter too early, you risk stunting his growth. And I think that being a 4th round pick instead of a 2nd (as some projected) affords him the luxury of not being asked to start so soon. There's a reason he was drafted in the 4th, because while he might have some potential, he's not ready to play. He's a project. I wouldn't even expect guys who have less upside but are more ready to play like Mettenberger or McCarron to play much this season. Not unless Locker and Dalton get hurt (certainly a possibility with Locker).
Time to bring in Mallett is next year, when he's a free agent and won't cost a draft pick, and after we've had a chance to see if Savage has a prayer to be a future starting QB. They leaked that because it was in the best interest of both teams. The pats are trying to fend off angry fans wondering why they squandered their 2nd rounder on a .qB they don't need instead of focusing on winning now. The texans needed to silence all the QB obsessed fans that were freaking out over us not drafting a QB in the first few rounds.
If they did trade for Mallett, it would almost assuredly mean that 1) Both TJ and Case would be cut and 2) They'd carry 3 QBs. That's obviously a conclusion they would have to come to before making such a trade.
Most likely scenario. New coach bringing in familiar faces is nothing new especially when it comes to quarterbacks. Case and TJ will not be on the roster next year.
And that is highly unlikely. BOB probably wants to work with TJ/Case first, and Rick Smith is probably hesitant to let BOB start throwing so many assets around. You can't close the book on it entirely until OTAs hit, but once the Texans took Savage and made it through the entire draft without a trade, the Mallet scenario likelihood nosedived significantly.
I would bet that Mallet comes here in the next week or so for "future considerations". T.J. is a goner.
If they trade for Mallet then both TJ and Keenum are goners. There's a chance the team would only carry 2 QBs, but at the most they are only carrying 3.
Send those guys that jumped Schauby's fence. There has to be a reason Mallett hasn't been pursued by any other team until now. Unless its for a really late pick next year (5th/6th round) I don't see why you do it. I feel like we have our Mallett project in Savage already. Minus the off-field crap. There skillset and negatives are for the most part exactly alike. And you save money working with Savage instead of losing assets by trading for another project guy.
There's no reason to trade anything at all for Mallett, just wait till either the Pats cut him or he leaves in FA. Odds are that they aren't bringing 3 QB's into the season.
I agree, though Belichick being the spiteful, mean, selfish b*stard that he is, he will do everything in his power to salt the earth wherever it is he retreats. He will drag it out as long as possible to try and make sure that whoever gets cut won't have enough time to learn a new offense, and the teams looking to shore up the QB position will have already spent their money and effort looking for other solutions.
