Here's a band I've been listening for some time now. Well, their first three albums anyway. On Through the Night, High 'n' Dry and Pyromania are really badass heavy metal albums, but after that I didn't really care for their pop production of Hysteria onwards. My favorite songs on each of their first 3 albums: "Rocks Off" from their first, "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" from their second and "Stagefright" from their third. OTTN is probably my favorite album, closely followed by Pyro. How do you guys feel about them?
They have had their moments and standout songs. But, can't say I'm a huge fan. I always considered them more of the pop rock category and that's not really my thing as much as classic/prog rock. Back in seventh grade when they were very early into their careers, I had tickets with a friend to see them perform in Houston. But, my friend was a dope and lost his ticket. Since he acquired the tickets and still had mine (which I was going to buy and go with him), he ended up driving up to The Summit just to sell the one ticket because we could no longer go to the show together. lol I was more into them in middle school as that was when High n Dry and Pyromania came out and were popular on the radio. Those were like my BMX days. Still listen to them sometimes for nostalgia reasons if their songs come on the radio and maybe to play a guitar riff or two. Never bought an album that I can remember or, rather, got it from one of those record clubs way back then. I would have liked to see them live had my friend not lost his ticket. That was before their one guitarist died and the drummer lost his arm.
One of my favorite bands as a kid. I enjoyed all their albums up to and including Hysteria. Adrenalize was the album that turned me off, I thought it was too pop sounding. Don't really listen to them anymore but they are nostalgic to me. <iframe width="415" height="320" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/NM0jByUkv4g?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
You thought Adrenalize was too pop sounding and not Hysteria? What?? Your reason for disliking Adrenalize is why I dislike Hysteria lol
Hey I admit Hysteria was more of a pop production, but I still liked many of the songs on there; Run Riot, Gods of War, Women, etc. Plus I was a kid, lol. Adrenalize is like the worst parts of Hysteria, even more pop-ish, with less redeeming qualities. I guess I had a different tolerance for pop-ish metal than you, lol.
Let me add one more bit...this is like old Bon Jovi fans, some people thought they sold out at Slippery When Wet, others think they sold out at Bad Medicine. Then again, there are some folks who only like the new Bon Jovi stuff, lol. Anybody here only like the new Def Leppard?
Loved them when they first came out. I was in the 7th grade and had just started playing drums. Used to practice to the beginning of Rock of Ages (with the cowbell). GUNTER GLIEBEN GLAUTEN GLOBEN
Huge Def Leppard fan - I'm going to see them on tour with KISS this summer. Some of my faves: Photograph Foolin Too Late for Love Armageddon It Animal Rocket
Oh c'mon that was and I think still is a concert staple. "Rocks Off" was one of their early songs and I think it's one of the best on their first album. Straight up teenage heavy metal. Funny thing is they were all like 16-18 when they made that first EP and album. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/7jt64KI6EOc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Bon Jovi weren't nearly as poppy as Def Leppard in Hysteria and Adrenalize. Slippery When Wet definitely had some pop elements (especially in "Without Love", "Never Say Goodbye" etc.) but I disagree with the overall notion that they were pop rock, even back then. I like pretty much all Bon Jovi (they got me into music when I was a kid and I still think they get a bunch of unnecessary hate) but I preferred their more mature songwriting from Keep the Faith onwards. Look at me ramble on about Bon Jovi in a thread I made about Def Leppard!
6 years into their career isn't really when they "first came out". I liked them when I was a kid but I basically think they are terrible in hindsight and stopped listening to them after I turned about 13.
I like the first 4 albums, but to me the first 3 are the definitive Def Leppard records. I saw them at the Coliseum on the Pyromania tour and it was awesome. I have probably seen them 3 times in the last decade and its still a fun show.
