Astrodome

So did this just wank away our Superbowl bid? I thought getting rid of the dirty dome was part of the deal?

 

Nay. That's a done deal already. The prevailing thought was that an impending Superbowl would spur activity/action on the Dome's fate. But it seems we're content, and now basically doomed, to watch it rot forever.

 

Maybe they can convert it into a prison, or a new county jail. The county jail is always overcrowded.

 

If I had the money, I buy it and call it Roc Paint's Pleasure Dome. The largest strip-club in The World!

Now that would be an attraction.

 

Pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to get that "approval".

True but the Rodeo and the Texans don't care. They won't spend their money to grease the wheels. This thing will rot until a catastrophe makes it collapse and it kills a few people with it.

 

I think they very much do care. Premium parking and/or a project that could make money for the tenants?

Hell, they could use the space for a year-round rodeo-like carnival, with them splitting all the profits. They could lease the space out to food-trucks for a truly unique game-day/rodeo-day experience (again, with all the profits being split). They could turn it into green-space and hold concerts/events there (with potential profits).

Again, there is much more to be gained by turning the space/venue into something else... rather than letting it just sit there.

The project, titled the "Astrodome Hall of Fame," would be completed in time for the 2017 Super Bowl at NRG Stadium, according to a 37-page proposal obtained by the Houston Chronicle.

The plan is designed to pay tribute to "the Astrodome's history" and realize its potential as an "outdoor fulcrum" of the South Loop sports complex, according to the plan drawn up by two construction and architecture firms.

The plan's release comes two months after Harris County Judge Ed Emmett convened an Astrodome stakeholder's meeting, which was attended by Rodeo and Texans officials, to discuss where things stand with the iconic structure and what should be done next in determining its fate. It has not housed a sports team since 2000 when the Houston Astros moved to Minute Maid Field downtown and was declared unsuitable for occupancy in 2009.

Last year, the Rodeo and Texans, the two primary tenants of NRG Park, commissioned a study showing it would cost $29 million to demolish the vacant stadium and build a 1,600-space parking lot.

The organizations did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Demolishing would take a while I'm guessing. I doubt they can implode it because of proximity.

 

Hopefully the Texans and Houston Rodeo. It would be a shame for the taxpayers to foot the bill. We have already paid millions the last 14 years it has been vacant. Good riddance.

 

This proposal is actually really really awesome. A circular HD display that mimics the old Astros scoreboard and the circular frame of the dome. Really nice.

Aww damn. There goes my grand idea of having a place for young urban youths such as myself calling our very own exclusive country club.

 

Fantastic, I hope they keep the dome intact one way or another.

 

You can get the building to topple towards the orange lot easily. Thats what demo experts do. I dont want to see the building go though. But i will view the plan.
