I'm a liberal who owns guns, and don't mind other people having them either. I still want more gun control too.

    Nothing hypocritical about it.

What's hypocritical are conservatives who worry about simple gun control destroying an amendment to our constitution but don't worry about the death penalty and destroying the cruel and unusual punishment amendment to our constitution.

I'm sure there must be a point in there somewhere. If anyone figures out what it is, let me know.

Yeah, it's like owning a car and supporting speed limits. Terribly hypocritical.

I'm ultra pro gun rights and run into these types all the time. Mostly they just ignore gun laws currently in place and don't GAF about new laws they don't plan to follow. They are commonly known as "fudds" as in Elmer Fudd. Have guns to hunt, are in a union, and carry a 20 year old illegal pistol (most of their guns are 10+ years old) in their truck regularly but vote for more background checks.

Speaking of cars, the government regulation of who is allowed to drive is a much more pressing failure than gun control.

Where can I donate to Mayors against idiots with a DL?

This is awesome. Never let it be said that Americans are the only ones ignorant of the world and foreign countries/cultures.

America is as armed as it gets and it's hardly polite society. Just another stupid gun nut talking point.

I'm not against guns in general, but laws are not strict enough in the USA. I get people feel safer with a handgun to protect their home, but absolutely no one needs a rifle, semi-auto, shotgun etc. for self-defense. Reading the "what weapons do you own" thread, some of you guys have enough guns and ammo to form a little army and are preparin for 100 robbers at once.
Also, the background checks and how easy it is to get a gun are laughable, there needs to be way more control in that regard.

    Ahem.

You do realize that the majority of all pistols are semi-auto right?

You need a shotgun for self defense because they are simply more accurate and a sure shot if someone breaks in. All you really need to do is point in the general direction and the shell spreads and covers more area than a pistol round (say goodbye to the intruder if you're using a buckshot.) Also, the barrel is longer, so it aids in accuracy. Rifles are accurate as well, but slightly less common for home defense. A revolver works wonders between 15-18 feet or so.

You also have to consider the caliber. A .45 caliber bullet from a pistol will do more damage than a .22 caliber rifle. Wanna rethink that?

I am sorry, but if I had kids in my house and someone breaks in, I would use any force necessary to protect them. What do you suggest to "control" the firearm sales process?

We have some of the strictest gun laws (Chitcago, New York, DC) and those three places have a little gun crime don't they? GUN CONTROL DOES NOT WORK.

First of all, this is the USA. I can own as many guns as I want for whatever reason I want to own them. I'm thankful we have that right. You, much like our current president, doesn't seem to care about our rights (to bear arms).

If a criminal wants a gun, he doesn't give a damn what the law says. I can go up here three miles from where I live in Pearland into Houston, find a thug walking around and ask him where to buy a pistol and have one in less than 30 minutes. There isn't a law, a ordinance, a sign posted, some imaginary "gun free zone" or any other deterrent that's going to keep me from committing a crime, with a gun, where I know innocent people will be unarmed. Sure, make the laws stiffer and lock up criminals who use guns to commit their crimes, but there will be another thug right behind them with a lack of concern for any law, who will carry his gun into a GUN FREE ZONE where law abiding citizens DONT carry their guns, and kill someone.

The government CAN NOT keep the guns out of criminals' hands. It isn't possible. Unless the police start kicking in doors and searching houses. It ain't happening. There's nearly 400 millions guns in circulation in the USA. Make it as hard as you want to buy a gun, there will be thugs on the street who will always be able to get their hands on whatever kind of gun you want.

They have strict gun laws because of the gun crime. A city's restrictive laws on guns are by definition incredibly ineffective at stopping guns coming from outside the cities where the laws are lax. This is ANOTHER stupid talking point.

That's hardly gun control when people can travel only a short distance to bring guns into the restricted area.

What kind of American are you? You're saying Great Britain and Australia are capable but the US govt. isn't capable?

I am also a liberal and a gun owner. My favorite gun that I have is my model 1911 Colt .45 that was actually carried in WWII (my grandfather traded for it from a pilot they picked up out of the Pacific). I'd do my best Charlton Heston impersonation if someone tried to take that gun from me.

We sound like hypocrites to you, but you just sound like an angry d-bag.

Honest, law abiding citizens don't carry guns into these places to protect themselves because the criminals aren't scared.

I agree with stricter background checks and better, cheaper access to quality health-care (including mental health) being the best route. However, I own several different types of firearms because each has its own merits for personal defense or at the firing range.
