Now you know that this is the Texans we are talking about-----Team Disappointment. So, they will not let you down, they will disappoint. They will somehow screw this up. It's Houston sports! Seriously, I am counting on the "OBrien Factor." Surely we will see a difference.
Bridgewater, Jimmy G, maybe Carr. There are rumors about people being high on Logan Thomas as a project.
It would be ludicrous to take anyone else at number one. Especially when the owner already claimed that Clowney was "obviously" the best player. To the sized above, stop being an annoying child.
This just doesn't pass the smell test with me. It's pretty obvious to everyone with a pulse that an RG3-like haul via trade isn't happening this year. If anything, the leverage seems to be going the other way (see LaCanfora tweets). I buy that what's in the Walter Football report is the negotiating stance the Texans want as their public position. You have to start high in any negotiation, and with Clowney as the generally-considered BPA, it makes sense to talk him up as your likely selection should you keep the pick. If it's out there that you're leaning to a non-Clowney option, the Falcons could talk to the Rams instead, etc. What I don't buy is that the Texans have zeroed in on Clowney as 100% the guy, should they keep it. If Clowney is the clear choice among the top prospects, and trade offers obviously aren't up to par by Draft Chart standards, why work the phones so hard on a deal? My suspicion is that the Texans value several of these guys fairly closely, which is why they're so desperate to move down. But the other side of that coin is that if they keep the pick, I'd be surprised if they're 100% on Clowney. It certainly still could be him, but I'd bet that other guys (Mack/Robinson) are also in the conversation.
O'Brien's offense in New England utilized the slot receiver position a lot. I can see him going after one at some point in this draft.
Teddy Bridgewater would be perfect for Obrien (especially in the 2nd Round) There were reports out there today that Teddy said he had good meetings with Browns and also loved his meeting with Obrien.. So i guess he thinks it either Browns at 26 or Texans at 33? Do you think the Texans would trade ahead of the browns to draft Teddy B? what do you think it would take to trade back up to the first to draft Teddy Bridgewater (well if you felt the Browns were going to take him at 26)
Well, like I said. We'll see if he's the super star game changer like you proclaim him to be since it would be "ludicrous to take anyone else."
It's all about the selling perspective. In sales, if you get told no once, you don't just give up. You keep picking away until you can get a yes. The Texans are doing what they can to get the best deal for themselves.
nah Clowney is the Pick (if they stay at 1) which seems more and likely.. They will not trade the pick unless they get 2/3 first rounders) which it seems teams are not biting..
Sure the whole "smokescreen" theory is a possibility, but it makes sense that they'd zero in on the best prospect in the draft and IMO if they are asking for an RG3 trade, it's because they know there is almost no way anyone offers it. My suspicion is that they've made their minds up that Clowney is the guy they want, but they are willing to be bought off if anyone wants to "make them an offer they can't refuse".

I absolutely buy that, but I think part of the reason they're so aggressively pursuing said deal is because they value 2 or 3 guys fairly similarly. Clowney being one of them, of course.
Who would you guys say are the best sources to follow on Twitter for Texans updates? Who is their Jonathan Feigan or Jason Freidman? Sorry to derail the thread. Didn't want to start a new one. Back on topic, I finally watched Manziel's QB Camp with Gruden last night and it made me really like the guy but I still think it's too much of a gamble. Clowney seems like the guy if we don't trade back.
I don't think the Texans trade up for him unless it's fairly cheap or they are really sold on him. I could see the Browns having interest in him, but it would be a fairly odd pick getting a guy with a questionable frame into a division that is notorious for smash mouth style aggressive football.....though given the Browns draft history it wouldn't be surprising. I think if he's there at 33, they take him, or maybe even a cheap trade down, but I think they just go with the next man up rather than spending a lot to trade down.
We are 24 hours till the draft, I sure as hell hope the Texans know who they are taking at number 1. It has been 4 months since the season ended and they have had plenty of time to scout and interview all the top potential picks. I think the Texans know there is interest in Clowney around the league and he holds a lot a value to multiple teams. Of course they are listening to offers but I doubt they are "desperate" to trade the pick. If that was the case they would flip picks with a team and accept a 2nd and 3rd rounder or future pick. There is a reason the asking price for this pick is high and it is not because they are desperate to trade the pick it's because they know what a special player Clowney can be. Not to say they won't trade the pick last second but I think if they do trade it, they will be receiving a nice haul to really set themselves up for the future.
There's just been too much noise in recent days about non-Clowney options (at 1) and trading down for me to buy that scenario. I don't know why they'd need to ask for a trade in which there's "almost no way anyone offers it", unless it's a negotiating stance to set the table for a potential compromise (i.e. deal). I don't see why you'd put that information out there if Clowney is truly your far-and-away BPA and the clear-cut choice for your pick.
I think that perfectly explains why Clowney is the better pick for the Texans than Mack. While both make really great OLB prospects for the Texans, Clowney has the versatility to switch to DE in sub packages while Mack would have to stay at OLB. Tania Ganguli is the ESPN Texans writer, Nick Scurfield is another good one to follow, and Stephanie Stradley is also another good one.
If we do draft Clowney, people need to be patient not necessarily expect an immediate monster season. It may happen, but remember that Watt only had 5.5 sacks his rookie year. Look at the top 10 players in sacks last year and almost all of them had less than amazing sack totals, less than 4 on average. A lot of these guys don't really break out until their 2nd (and sometimes 3rd) year like Watt did.
Can't disagree with that, but it's obvious that the Texan's asking price is pretty STEEP! I don't think they will get a deal done whatsoever.
you guys are so gonna screw this up, i feel bad for you all. 1 week ago rockets get bounced and now this my guess is your taking bortles, but please just take Clowney. hopefully my eagles can get a slider in the defensive side like maybe dix
