Storage size is great, but I imagine its way too slow to be used to store and access big data efficiently. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know what the read/write/access capabilities of cassette tapes are or if they've found a way to circumvent the handicaps.

I was going to say it's not for that. Major companies do daily backups, it's not about speed in accessing the resource. It's intended to protect from data loss, and with the massive sizes that databases/hard drives are becoming that makes these a necessity for some.

If it takes hours to restore something that's not really an issue. If the data is gone, that's a problem.
Additionally it's intended to be a temporary solution as opposed to hard drives. Though I don't know just how long they'll retain data without decay.

 

Awesome, though better for backup purposes than archiving, since it is still tape. Still, SDLT speeds on writing and reading are pretty awesome considering they are tape, so I assume this is even better.
